Torah testifies that G-d chose the Land of Israel and cherishes it, sanctifying it for all time. But in this week’s Torah portion of parashat Shelach, ten of the twelve men who returned from spying out the land, slandered the Land of Israel, and delivered a baseless, negative report that plunged the nation into unprecedented crisis -- and set into motion a cycle of tragedy and destruction that left an indelible imprint on Jewish history. The poisonous slander against the Land of Israel that began with the sin of the spies, continues to this day. How do we understand this heinous sin against the land, and what is our role in stopping the cycle of slander against the Land of Israel?
The portion of Shelach (Numbers 13 : 1 - 15 : 41) is read on Shabbat: Sivan 25, 5781/June 5, 2021
