In case anyone's wondering what she says at the end of the video, "Ich leb' allein in meinem Himmel, in meinem Lieben, in meinem lied." from Mahler's Rückert-Lieder: Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen. Translated, it means " I live alone in my own heaven, in my love, in my song." She finishes by saying " Schöner gehts nicht", meaning "It could not be more beautiful." Jessye Norman, you could not be more beautiful. Thank you for being an inspiration to so many singers over the years, myself included. Thank you for the beautiful recordings you leave behind. Rest gently, beautiful queen.

This moved me to tears. She possessed the greatest voice that I have ever heard. I heard her sing as Jocasta in Aedipus Rex when I sang with the Philharmonia Chorus. I queued to meet her after the performance. I have never felt such charisma. It was like an audience with a Queen. She was warm and charming during our short conversation. I had met true greatness. I will never forget it. I was very upset that she passed away. She had a nobility about her. There were comments on her blackness when she was singing roles early in her career. Her reply was " I rather like the colour myself". She rose above it all.

He would have written it for counter-tenor, a bloke, because he had these in his company.! Check the many historically accurate versions on You-Tube. Janet Baker more like the style. But I agree this is spectacular, and Mr Purcell would have been amazed, and would have loved Miss Norman, though. He was quite a lad.

@@camthesaxman3387 I mean your opinion is valid, but vibrato has a heavy presence in baroque music, however in a much different way than modern interpretation. Typically it is used as ornamentation on long ending notes like the “me” is “remember me” and of course the “ahs” and “fate”. It is a bit excessive in other places, but does not make the English intelligible unless you just have poor hearing.

This is the first time I am hearing Miss Norman. I have heard many other great opera singers, but truly her voice is the most beautiful of all! It is like an arrow that shoots right into your heart and awakens your soul. Such a piercing, almost painfully beautiful voice!

How could we forget a goddess? This is so painfully beautiful it is impossible to describe. One of the great divas of all times. RIP.

Jessye Norman will now make the angels in heaven cry with her enchanting voice. The angels will then understand what she has given the people on earth with her voice. Unforgettable, the queen of the opera! Rest in Peace ......

This was this song that pulled me to her. It was her presence that took me over. What an amazing talent. We love her.

Such pure emotion, and through this stunning voice, it shatters through ages. It's when we are most human, we are most transcendent.
