One of the favorite hymn tunes in the SA's Tune Book is "Deep Harmony," composed by Handel Parker. It has become a favorite melody for brass bands both in and out of the Salvation Army world. In my edition of the SA Songbook, the melody is primarily linked to a hymn by a German count, Nicholas Ludwig Zinzendorf, known by intimates as "Brother Ludwig." From his childhood he was smitten by a love of our Lord. From Wikipedia: "At age six, young Nikolaus would often write love letters to Jesus. He would then climb to the castle tower and toss them out the window, where they scattered around the courtyard like innocent prayers." He later wrote a number of hymns, and it was one of these that the founder of Methodism, John Wesley, translated into English. It is these words that I've used in this setting of Deep Harmony:
Jesus, Thy blood and righteousness
my beauty are, my glorious dress;
'midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed,
with joy shall I lift up my head.
