Nice addition RP! I've also got a 1970s Craftsman drill press, and I've been planning to do the counterweight mod on it. That tilting table sure is nice, though!

Thanks a lot Rick. I still have the same model Craftsman drill press that you have. Very smooth running machine. I think the counter weight mod would very nice and make for some good content!

Nice video. I just bought the Jet 20MF floor drill press. My table has different T slot patterns than yours. I can’t find anything that tells me what size T nuts to get. If you know, I’d appreciate your telling me. I’m also interested in your other mods. 1. How to wire for reverse. 2. How to add a DRO and what kind. 3. How the weight of your XY slide will effect the table going up and down. I just put one on and I need to raise it so the handle clears the table. But the damn thing shudders like crazy when I raise the table. It’s unclear to me how to secure parts to the table. I’m not really happy with this machine but hopefully your videos will improve my outlook. Thanks, Paul

I just bought an old ass one from Craigslist for 300. It's stamped for 1997 and only has ancillary problems to fix, but overall, everything is solid

Another pertinent video! I bought a used Jet drill press used a few years ago about the same size as yours but with a round table. I sold my old Taiwanese press from the seventies which was very similar. Now I regret that I did that as I find my Jet has quite a bit of flex where the column goes into the casting at the base. Very irritating as the workpiece you have just laboriously centered vibrates all over the table when it is running. I am still thinking of a solution for it. The older drill press never gave a problem. The flex can be isolated to that column connection. The base casting is solid. Hope yours works out better for you. Thanks again.

Thanks Douglas. I would be interested to know how you fix that base issue. The casting inspectors in China don't seem to reject much.

What do you think about this puppy being rigged onto some sort of wheels.

That's a lovely drill press, I am pretty confident that you will love it, because I have basically the same machine! Mine's GMC brand, but similarly nice castings and quality. I got mine used. Only functional differences I can see are that yours has a threaded rod style depth stop (which I prefer), where mine has the rotating type on the quill handle. Also mine has a 2hp motor where I think you said yours has 1hp. Honestly that doesn't matter a lot, these drills would have plenty good low speed torque for large holes in steel even with the 1hp motor. If you would like to see a brief look at mine, have a look at my "Workshop Tour 2020" video from July 2020, and at the 12 or 13 minute mark you'll see it. I prefer the colour of yours for the record! I need to pick mine up a good 150mm/6" before it's anywhere near the right height for me. I am looking forward to seeing your future modifications.

@@RPMechanics Sadly it was a camera phone job. I have made a few changes since last year, so I'm probably nearly due another tour for 2021, and I can do it with a better camera this time.
