Boy Scout Grounds
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Zamboanga City, well-known for holding conferences, regional seminars, conventions, outdoor camping or jamborees of Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts and has won awards as the number one garden in the Philippines.
A total contrast from the busy city center, lazy afternoons can best be enjoyed here with the cool breeze of the air, the towering trees and clean surroundings at the Boy Scout grounds. It is a park built to commemorate the 24 Filipino boy scouts who died in a plane crash in India while they were on their way to attend a Jamboree in Greece in 1963.
Probably the most iconic landmarks here are the teepees and the tree house built way back in the 1960’s. the camp site has it all: camp-fire space, open amphitheatre and a scout stage where activities were held to make scouting a fun experience
The grounds also holds a statue of a Dr Jose Rizal, depicted here as a young lad carrying his books to school. This statue serves as a living example of how great the study prowess and a genius Dr. Jose Rizal was during his time and that his values and virtues are what we want the young carry on with their lives too.
TREE HOUSE
One of the best attractions and identifiable image of the City of Zamboanga is the famous Tree House nestled inside the Pasonanca Park.
The Tree House was originally constructed to be the Youth Citizenship Training Center in April 1960 through the initiative of Mayor Cesar Climaco. The family of the late mayor Climaco, in partnership with the City Government, took the lead in refurbishing the tree house with comfortable twin beds and a bathroom. The tree house, which is considered as one of his legacies, is located at Camp Jose Atilano Campsite in the village of Pasonanca. If you wish to stay for a night and all you have to do is book it at the city mayor’s office.
The Tree House was re-inaugurated in 2016 with the official unveiling of the marker led by Climaco’s niece, former Mayor Beng Climaco celebration of the late mayor’s 100th birth anniversary. It continuous to be a symbol of the city and tourism. The tree house is thus enthralling that one foreign visitor even made a poem about it dated as far back as 1963 and she is Elizabeth Stafford.
