Hey! I’ve uploaded my first images to jetphotos a few days ago (without editing, which now I’ve realized after checking and watching this, probably needed some touch ups on the histograms) and this will be such a help so I can get my first few images uploaded! I find it hard to use apps from adobe but the tutorial and explanation really easy to understand, and I thank you so much!!

Great tutorial mate. I wish I had seen this much sooner. I was initially uploading with a Tamron 18-400mm paired with a Canon 77d & I was getting many rejections for being under sharpened. I have now upgraded to a Canon 100-400mm f2.8 mk2 & my acceptance rate has started to shoot up. I am currently at 56% with almost 500 shots but before the lens upgrade I was around the 50% mark. I saw you are using the 70-200mm, just wondering what body you are using with it. Also I have been uploading successfully with sharpness 150 with the same LR you use. Should I start to back it off now I am using the new lens?

Hey mate thanks for the kind remarks. If you'd find it easier you can contact me on my social media (@baverstock_photography - instagram). I use(d) Canon 5D iii and iv for the camera body. Lenses: I use the Canon 17-40 F4, Canon 100-400 F4.5-F5.6 Mk1 and the Canon 70-200 F2.8 Mk2. My photographer mate has the Tamron 18-400 and unfortunately the quality and sharpness from that lens is never going to be able to compete with your new 100-400 no matter how good of a photographer you are (so don't be too bummed about those old rejections). I wouldn't recommend going above 100 for sharpening or else you will risk an "oversharpened" rejection. However, if 150 is working for you I don't see the need to change it. This is just my workflow which you can tweak over time and experience to suit you own preferences and equipment. Hope that helps - Joel

I wanna ask,is it inapporpriate to do the dust remove in the last part after all the other edit ? Because sometimes my pics are rejected as the reason of bad processing. And i'm confuced about if it's the reason that I remove the dust in the end that making it bad quality, thanks.

It shouldn't matter when you use the dust removal tool. I'd suggest doing it first to get it done and out of the way. Bad processing comes from using texture, clarity and dehaze, generally.

I’m still chasing my first acceptance into JP. My most recent was only rejected due to the horizon, would it be alright if I fixed it and re-uploded? I didn’t know you could check your photo with the items JP offers on their website to double check before committing to the upload. I have a couple that got accepted to Plane Spotters, but I’m still struggling with taking sharp images and editing in Light Room. What are your tips for taking sharp images? I’m shooting with a Canon 50D with a Sigma 125-400 lens.

Hi Joel. I have a question. This is with regards to issues of compression artifacts issues and bad post-processing. I sometimes faced issues in JP when it comes to those two especially in a blue sky scenario. I once did tried transferred it directly from light room to JP with the correct resolution, and it was rejected for "noise" when I already clearly denoised it. I just edit it on my phone using the Lightroom phone version. How did yours fare?
@joelbaverstock2121

I have never uploaded from my phone so am not sure if i can help you too much there but that could definitely be a compression issue. compression can also be due to large crops. if you would like some help feel free to contact me on instagram and i can give you some more in-depth help there! - @baverstock_photography

Thanks for recording this...Personally, I find your edit to be far, far, far too contrasty. The whites of the plane are totally blown out. Contrast of 40??? There is almost no detail whatsoever in the fuselage. However, as you point out, you have a high acceptance ratio. It must be somehow that the hive mind of screeners at JP have collectively arrived at a personal preference for overly contrasty blown out images. Its baffling to me - I'd say half the images I see need at least a bit of highlight reduction. And this is exactly how modern camera sensors are intended to be used. The dynamic range is able to be preserved resulting in images that contain far more detail. I really don't understand it, but it was illuminating to watch your process - clearly you are leaning into the preferred style, whether you like it or not. If this is indeed the way, i might need to re-consider ever posting on JP...just because its the preferred editing style doesn't make it aesthetically pleasing or technically correct. And photography, while fairly subjective as an art form, is still subject to some basic fundamentals. Is it possible you are actually a screener too for JP? that would make more sense.
@joelbaverstock2121
2 жыл бұрын
I have the pre-requisites to be a screener but do not have the time to dedicate towards it as it requires a big commitment. They also haven't recruited in a while. As I mentioned in the video this was just a rough guideline/template so you can find your own editing style from there. So someone like yourself might be suited to slightly less contrast in images. I used to use very little contrast and got rejections for "lack of contrast" so began to use more contrast and also had a personal preference towards that look. Remember, this is photography, everyone does things differently which is what makes every photographer unique. If you would like to chat further feel free to contact me through my photography page - @baverstock_photography or you can check my JP profile which is linked in the description to see my other images (maybe to check the contrast in those?) Hope that helps ;)
@John_Hudson_922
2 жыл бұрын
@@joelbaverstock2121 yeah ive looked through your images and talked with the screeners there. Its pretty clear they favor major contrast in their images, and absolutely zero use of the highlights and shadows sliders. Aka pretty much the opposite of traditional photography. But, maybe these people all come from more of an aviation/spotting background, and not a photography background. Who knows. Either way, that's the style they prefer, so you are correct. You have a lot of great images by the way!

@@John_Hudson_922 The issue with using the highlights/shadows slider is that it creates a halo around the aircraft and that is not a pleasant look. If you don't like heavy highlights then just drag the white's slider back, it does a good job and doesn't bring up a halo
@John_Hudson_922
2 жыл бұрын
@@joelbaverstock2121 I know, in my opinion the whole "halo" thing is blown out of proportion. Yes, if you go full 100% on the sliders in either direction, its possible that it might show up against the sky. However, tasteful use of the sliders is totally unnoticeable (unless equalizing, which isn't how it will look normally, so i dont get the point. OF course you can abuse any photoshop setting to expose some flaws). I dont think I have ever seen a photo that wouldn't benefit from some highlight reduction or shadow boost. That is literally what Camera designers are trying to gain natively with higher bit sensors with dynamic range, etc. But, I digress.
@alexsaffe4595
2 жыл бұрын
We really have nothing against using the highlight / shadow tool. It's actually one of the best tool around and not that hard to use. If halos start to appear then you're overusing it (for JP) but there's still a lot of marge before those halos start to appear. And note those halos would be almost impossible to see if you don't have a sky background so it's also about when to (over)use it or not.
