It beautifully captures that weird, empty, depressed feeling that comes after a crushing breakup. Life goes on, but there's kind of a gray film over everything, and all the things that used to be normal feel off somehow. And paired with that gentle but relentless ostinato in the guitar, endlessly moving forward (despite the vocal line's resistance), until that one moment of almost-recognition of what's happened ("hearts are broken every day")? Perfection.

So true... I've never felt the same since my only traumatic breakup. Life has never been the same I have moved on but my heart aches, and I've never been able to reproduce the happiness that I had when I was living in existential Bliss with someone that I had so much promise with. It only feels like failure. Which means I guess it was love

she played a small venue here in chicago back in 2003, in a semi-private event...there were probably about 25 of us there, and nobody except me knew who she was. not many people were actually paying her much attention...i think they didn't realize she used to be a huge star in the 1990s. after her set, i got to sit at a table with her, just the two of us, and we had a friendly chat. she's a very sweet, soft-spoken woman who's very real and down to earth. and she has the most beautiful smile. she signed a business card which i borrowed from someone, because i didn't own any business cards. it says: "dear Jim, thank you for the coffee and the lovely conversation. you're a true gentleman and a wonderful listener. your friend, Jewel K." it looks nice in its little frame by the front door. she's such a sweetheart. i love her.

I hear the clock, it's six A.M. I feel so far from where I've been I got my eggs, I got my pancakes too I got my maple syrup, everything but you. I break the yolks and make a smiley face I kinda like it in my brand new place Wipe the spots off of the mirror Don't leave my keys in the door I never put wet towels on the floor anymore 'cause Dreams last so long Even after you're gone I know that you love me And soon you will see You were meant for me And I was meant for you. I called my mamma, she was out for a walk Consoled a cup of coffee but it didn't wanna talk So I picked up the paper, it was more bad news More hearts bein' broken, more people being used Put on my coat in the pouring rain I saw a movie it just wasn't the same 'Cause it was happy or I was sad And it made me miss you oh so bad 'cause Dreams last so long Even after you're gone I know that you love me And soon you will see You were meant for me And I was meant for you. I go about my business, I'm doing fine Besides what would I say if I had you on the line? Same old story, not much to say Hearts are broken, every day. I brush my teeth, I put the cap back on I know you hate it when I leave the light on I pick a book up and then I turn the sheets down. And then I take a deep breath and a good look around Put on my pj's and hop into bed I'm half alive but I feel mostly dead I try and tell myself it'll all be alright I just shouldn't think anymore tonight 'cause Dreams last so long Even after you're gone I know that you love me And soon you will see You were meant for me And I was meant for you. Yeah, you were meant for me and I was meant for you.

I remember in first grade I had no idea how to speak English and this song always came on the radio before it turned to crud. It stayed in my mind and heart and although I did not understand the meaning the melody moved me -- I knew she was in pain just by the notes. This is great music -- she is very talented. I would always love listening to her on the school bus without knowing who she was--her art transcended past the language barrier and age barrier at the time.

This is Jewel at her best. Just her voice and her acoustic. That's all she needs to make amazing music. Her best work was her early work, before she went full pop on some of her later stuff. Pieces of You was a phenomenal album. None of her later work can top that debut album. Spirit is a close second though. Those two albums were a huge part of my 90s and early 2000s. This is interesting to watch, but I have to say the record (single version) is better. On this version, there are LOTS of little changes -- to the melody, the timing, the style -- from the original recordings. I wish that when she performed it here (in the clip) she simply sang it straight, with just one or two tiny tweaks. Just enough that you know it's "live." But it's her song, and it's a great song, and she can do it any way she wants.

I was like 9 when I first heard this song. I loved it, even though I didn't really comprehend the lyrics. As I got older and could appreciate the lyrics, I loved it even more.
