I love your XY table. It is a good design and quality. I have a cheap Chinese version I purchased to mount a laser for a Rose Engine jig on my wood lathe which has a LOT of backlash, poor fit and finish, barely useable for this use. I would have picked up your XY table in a heartbeat. The jeweling with the XY table looks terrific. Dave.

I have one of the cast iron XY tables. It is minimal at best. Still it allows me to use the drill press to mill slots. The thing I have to do is use the end mills as they were designed and the drill press as designed. Both were made for straight up and down cutting with the end of the tool. Unless the drill press has a draw bar to hold the tool holder/chuck in the spindle it can fall out if the cutter is drug sideways through the cut. Also the drill press bearings are installed to handle end load not side load. In any case your XY is a very nicely arranged rig. $25.00 is a steal.

There was a guy named Josè Rodriguez who put out videos on VHS before KZitem on how to do simple machining operations at home and I bought his tapes. He used to mill on a drill press using end mills and very light cuts. It took a while but for softer materials it was an option! 😃👍

Knurling is a different operation than jeweling or engine turning. Knurling is a forming operation normally performed on a lathe. Surface material is displaced and formed into a pattern. It is usually purposed to provide grip or purchase.

Great video 👍That little hammer 🔨 would make a great addition to any workshop , it doesn’t have a long handle and it is not to heavy in the hand. That Kraeuter 8 inch pliers look really nice, I like the embellishmentson the handle. That was a fantastic find.👍 That little milling table looks really fantastic. I think that will make a great addition to your drill press. I think you got a great deal on that. I do see the difference in hand Jeweling & using the milling table for jeweling . The milling table looks like it will keep you work more accurate and straight like every time you use it, were by doing it by hand your work can be off and not straight. I can also see were it can make your work look more Professional like when advancing your work piece using the clamps provided with the milling table. Great information on using the milling table and jeweling or engine turning.👍👍 I think you made me a fan of jeweling.😂👍The jeweling one time you did to a old socket box and made it look fantastic was when I look at jeweling different. Now I kinda like it and it is fun to do. Well again great video and can’t wait for Friday’s video! 😃👍👍

Do not use bolts instead of T-nuts on anything with Tee slots. Unless of course you want a nice chunk of your table broken out. The shop I worked in as an apprentice always jeweled the exposed non-functional surfaces on jigs and fixtures. The reason I was given was to retain an oil film to prevent rust. We used rubberized Cratex sticks in the drill press to do the work. The makers initials and date were also stamped on the work in a small milled out relief pocket. I still do both out of habit I guess. Of course, when you get old like me, you look at something and figure you must have made it.... your initials are on it. Cheers from NC/USA

John, a possible future topic is to really compare/contrast a drill press vs a milling machine. The difference goes way beyond an X-Y table. Mills are first and foremost about rigidity, rigidity, rigidity, as well as power, speed control, top grade spindle bearings, etc. I mention this because when my serious shop got started, I knew zero about machine tools. I tried to set up a bench-top drill press to mill, and learned it’s just not meant to be! I really don’t want someone else to make the expensive mistakes I did!

One additional benefit of jeweling, is it's ability to have a lubricant cling to it. I've seen it done with that goal in mind.
My wife gave me a Hamilton RR pocket watch some 30 years ago that was dated 1908. Initially I carried it for several years always marvelling at the workmanship and extreme accuracy. The embellishment and engine turning is nicely done; now I know how it was done, but in miniature. Great information, Thanks!
