St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross was born Edith Stein in 1891 to a German Jewish family. As a teenager though, she drifted away from faith in God. She considered herself an atheist, and she sought life’s meaning through the study of philosophy. She distinguished herself in doctoral studies with some of the most famous thinkers of her time.
Later in life, she happened upon the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila ... and she couldn’t put it down. She read it; and, soon afterward, she was baptized as a Catholic and eventually entered the Carmelite order in 1933. During that decade, Adolf Hitler was on the rise and took over power, ordering the killing of Jews in Germany. In solidarity with her people, she was taken to an Auschwitz concentration camp where she was martyred in 1942.
