Jigen-ryu Hyoho is a style of swordsmanship unique to Kagoshima founded by Togo Tobei Bizen no Kami Chui (1561-1643). Jigen-ryu formed an integral part of the training of the samurai in Satsuma. Even today Jigen-ryū has a profound effect on the mentality and culture of Kagoshima.
Jigen-ryu has been passed down unchanged from father to one son over the past 400 years to the 13th-generation headmaster, Togo Shigetaka.
Ajikan is a meditation method taken from the Shingon school of esoteric Buddhism that the founder of Jigen-ryu Togo Chui found useful to achieve the right mindset for practising swordsmanship.
Samurai of Culture is a new cultural tourism programme based on the authentic traditions of the samurai. Passed down over hundreds of years from generation to generation, these traditions have been kept alive by a handful of devoted students.
Join us in Kagoshima to experience the samurai culture of the Satsuma domain as it survives today.
