For the few that don't know... Jim wrote this song sitting at the kitchen table in the old farmhouse he and his wife were renting in... upstate new york...I think... when the times were hard and the money was lean. His wife had just told him that she was pregnant and...being classic Jim...he immediately panicked because they couldn't afford a child. He and his wife got into somewhat of a small argument because of his worry and his inability to be overjoyed by the news. She went upstairs, he sat down at the kitchen table with his Martin guitar and wrote a song to tell his wife what he really wanted to say to her... instead of what he'd actually said. He also realized that if they were going to bring a child into this world then he would have to earn more money to be able to provide for his family. What we now have left of Jim...those beautiful songs that we all sing the lyrics to everytime they come on the radio...all those songs that touch our hearts and paint vivid scenes in our minds as we listen.. those songs... Jim wrote over the period of that following week...sitting at that kitchen table... in that little rented farmhouse they could barely afford. That week of effort, love, and worry on Jim's part... provided songs that generations of people would live, laugh, cry, mourn, and fall in love to for decades to come. That week's worth of writing genius made an indelible and lasting mark on the hearts of millions and on this planet forever. Jim, thank you for the soundtrack to my lifetime on this planet. I never knew you...I was only a child myself when you were taken, but somehow I feel I knew you as a brother. Rest peacefully dear soul. You earned the rest. (Denny Lee 1/20) Remember...at that moment you think you can't...that you don't have the ability...that you're not important enough...that's the moment you define who you are. You should...you can...now will you?

The story that I heard was that Jim had gone out with some friends promising Ingrid, his wife, that he would be home early. Ingrid was not very happy when he came home late and locked the bedroom door. He went to the kitchen and wrote the song and then proceeded to sing it to her outside the bedroom. The story didn't give any details about what happened next.

I can not disagree, although there are so many I hold that are so exquisitely written and sung, the list I have in that top category are heart-wrenching because they are so touching. More so when the songwriter-performer has passed to that songwriting-singing place up above. Jim, John Lennon, and Karen Carpenter, are among the very best and deeply loved singers that almost everyone can agree can not be topped when at their peak. "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" is Jim's peak for that special emotional touch that few others have been able to touch the heart so deeply. The fact that all 3 died so unexpectedly and so young probably has something to do with it: Jim 30, Karen 32, John 40. They should have had decades more to write or perform and spread that special happiness and good feelings that they did for the few short years they were allowed to have. Miss those three and many others who can no longer add to their repertoire of singing and/or writing. Jim was going to give up traveling and performing, and told his wife Ingrid he was going to quit music and stick to writing short stories and movie scripts as a career and withdraw from public life. He was shockingly killed in a freak airplane crash because the pilot did not see the tree because of severe darkness, when taking-off on the night of Sep. 20, 1973, after Jim's performance in Natchitoches, LA. Croce's bandmate bandmate Maury Muehleisen also died, along with the pilot and two others. I found out years later, Jim was going to perform at my university two weeks after his plane crashed. My copy of his album, "Photographs and Memories" (1974) is a cherished possession. Jim Croce, 30 Jan. 10, 1943 Philadelphia, PA - Sep. 20, 1973 Natchitoches, LA.

I will always treasure the memory of seeing Jim Croce live at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos, California in 1973. He was the opening act for of all people Woody Allen. Woody Allen was doing stand up as well as his writing at this time. But Jim and his accompanying guitar player were the stars of the whole show. His12 string guitar playing was just captivating. As a teenager I had never heard anything so beautiful. Thanks for the memories Jim...

This masterpiece from Jim has a flow unlike almost any I have heard from a ballad! Has always been my favorite Jim Croce song! Should have been a #1 top pop hit, but it did get to #9 in Apr. 1974 on the Billboard Hot 100, over 6 months after his death. It did reach the top (#1) spot on the Adult Contemporary chart, and #68 on the Country chart, his only appearance on it. He should have had many more years of terrific songwriting his soft rock and story-telling ballads, but he only had 30 years. We were robbed of great music, and his loss still resonates and wondering "what if he lived to 77", after the 47 years lost from Sep. 20, 1973.

A haunting, magnificent, exquisite, incredible song from one of the very best singer-songwriters. How it only peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early-Apr. 1974, is unknown. What were people thinking, after his sudden passing at only 30 the prior Sep. 20 (1973), to give this finest example of a ballad only to #9? It should have been an easy #2 at the least. Nevertheless, it will be remembered far longer than many of the songs that hit higher, and Jim Croce will never be forgotten in music history from the early-1970s. Same for his greatest hits album "Photographs & Memories," (1974) which is a cherished possession, every song on it tells a story. We should have enjoyed many more years of his passionate story-telling in song, than having it stop so soon after he finally made it big with his #1 (July 1973) with "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown."

Always wanted to go to Croce's in Diego, but keeping a family together, work and staying afloat in a turbulent economy made me miss that too (thank you Ingrid for keeping it going as long as you did, I missed it by two weeks, was driving to Croce's West from Ariziona to finally fulfill a dream and checked the website one last time before departure). Still listening to his music and appreciating him and glad other people are helping keep this alive. Time waits for no one: he understood better than anyone. His song "Time In a Bottle" was our wedding song.

27 years ago, I used to sing and dedicate this song to a wonderful lady that I had fallen in love with. At that time, I was too nervous to tell her those words: "Wan, I LOVE YOU". So, I kept on singing this song each time we go to those karaoke clubs. At the end of time, through no fault of hers, she married someone that I know... For the last 27 years, we moved on. But I still keep thinking of her every second of the day, everyday of the week, every week of the month, every month of the year. Now, towards the end of my colourful life, I still sing and dedicate this song for her, as my last breath approaches soon......

I am here because I heard this song , in fact the last line of this song on my car radio just as i was about to drive on. Switched on the radio and this song ended with that line. It touched a cord within me and i told myself,, i had to find out who wrote those beautiful last line. It was Jim Croce. It has been over 40 years since i listened to his songs that i forgot his name. RIP Jim . YOU were gone too soon that your amazing talent went unrecognized.

It's my personal vow to send to you my song everyday, without fail, to express to you the things I want to say and am not gonna stop doing this until I am given the chance to say it personally. Until then BB, I'll have to say I love you in a song. I'll have to say I love you in the song of my heart. I hope you listen to every song I give you coz it carries with it all my love. I hope I'll get the chance to say I love you personally soon. I hope I'll get the chance to hear it from you too. Until then, let me say again tonight that I love you so much my Jimbo for life and beyond. Kisssss ~ Ranzie

Esta canción la dediqué a alguien que llegó a mi vida inesperadamente, pero por más que intentaba llegar a su corazón no me dejaba quererlo. Y lo quiero y lo pienso tanto. ❤❤❤
