I was lucky enough to be at the Grand Old Opry on a night that Jim Ed Brown was on the show list. He is not only a great singer and song writer, he is also one of the finest gentlemen ever to grace the Opry stage. He knows what an honor it is and really appreciates the fact that people will come to see him

Wow Kenny Vaughn is giving an absolute masterclass on country rhythm guitar with his counterpoint lines under the melody. Guitar players take note - this is how you imply harmony and passing tones without just strumming chords through a song

That happens. I had the same realization when Willie Nelson recorded "Blue Skies". Had no IDEA that Irving Berlin wrote it and it was a big hit in the 1940's & 1950's for Ella Fitzgerald & others. I sang in a folk trio for about a year, around 2010. A lot of our audience was folks 40+ years old. But to the bartenders, servers, and a lot of misc. audience, we could have said we wrote every blessed song and they wouldn't have known the difference, since it was all from the 1960's & 1970's.

Not likely to happen, though. Most Under 30 Kids would never suspect who sang it, much less who wrote it. They were gone from radio for 15 years before some were even born. We got a lot of comments from 20-30 yr olds about how they liked the songs, though. Really good songs die hard and slowly, and for a reason. There were a LOT of good ones in the Sixties in Folk and most other genres too... not like today. The ratio of Good to Bad is nearly reversed today, compared to then.

Alan's recording of it is okay, but the way he changed the meter kind of flattened out the melody. I don't think it would have thrilled me even if I'd never had Jim Ed's version to compare it to. I used to listen to Jim Ed do it on the car radio driving to summer school after my (almost second) junior year in high school, in 1968.

Gee, he must've had to do that finger-in-the-mouth cheek pop more than 50,000 times by now. And he has to use the finger to play his guitar. I wonder if he ever gets an irritation or infection from all that popping.
