Jim Kirkwood must be an interesting fellow. I was just checking out his Bandcamp page. Not only does he go through the trouble or writing and producing all this great music, and not only does he go through the trouble of drawing his own album covers, but he gives them all away for free. How cool is that! As Klaus Schulze would've said, "The [Berlin School] Force is strong with this one."

I never understood the need to retrofit Kirkwood's music so that it's 'part' of the dungeon synth genre just because it uses synthesizers and is fantasy-themed. It sounds closer to Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze -- 70's/early 80's German space music that tends to focus on more 'busy' melodies resulting from synthesizer-noodling, more lush sounds, and making the 'electronic' element more obvious, bringing to mind futuristic themes and technology in the process. Of course, Mayhem loved Tangerine Dream and Conrad Schnitzler did the intro to their debut album, and Burzum was heavily inspired by Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michelle Jarre, which you can clearly hear on the 'Rundgang' track on Filosofem, so the genres are inevitably intertwined in some weird way. At times, Kirkwood's music also reminds me of the NeverEnding Story soundtrack, which probably was also a subconscious influence on dungeon synth at some point, but the link is still tenuous and Kirkwood himself never set out to make music in the vein of Burzum, Mortiis, Summoning, Lord Wind, Depressive Silence, etc.

@Howdy Pardner The aesthetics and themes are borrowed from tabletop roleplaying games. The fact that it's in black and white has more to do with the fact that it's really ancient and was originally released on cassette in the pre-Internet era where it would have been prohibitively expensive to print artwork in color. The black metal aesthetic is the result of the same technological limitations and was only later made into part of the culture. I'd say that both dungeon synth and Kirkwood used artwork and aesthetics that already existed before the music itself. But I wouldn't say Kirkwood's music sounds anything like dungeon synth.
@gadpivs
3 жыл бұрын
@Ice Hockey is Pretty Pretty Good I'm not hearing any horns or stereotypical medieval instruments or anything dark and war-like and... dungeony, here. It's Tangerine Dream with a medieval theme. Some guy on a blog included it among his list of dungeon synth albums and a bunch of people who don't know how to use their brains while listening just went along with it. That doesn't make it part of the same genre, and external or surface aesthetics do not equal content. That said, it's not bad music by any means. It's just silly to include it in a list of Mortiis or Burzum-style music just because of a couple of album covers. Varg, Satyr, Rob Darken, Mortiis, etc. have no idea who this guy is. He didn't "found" anything of theirs, or the people they went on to inspire.

Can someone help me, I remember finding an album/a few songs on youtube from someone I *think* was Jim Kirkwood, a few years ago, but now I can't remember the name of the songs. The theme of the music wasn't medieval, but rather more sci-fi (?), and I remember at least one of the songs had a tropical theme, being about a lagoon or something. The music itself was very atmospheric, borderline noisy, with some exotic and almost psychedelic sounds. It's *possible* that it wasn't Jim Kirkwood, but it was definitely in the synth genre, and I remember the name of the artist was a similar first and last name -- too similar, I think, for it to have been anyone else.
