I think having racing drivers crossover like the way Johnson and Alonso are doing is absolutely brilliant because, like you pointed out, it is a back to basics way of finding out who the best auto racing drivers in the world are. Not who the best drivers in a specialized type of racing are. Hi David,just subscribed because its refreshing to listen to sensible,non partisan commentary.Most channels push the barrow(as we say out here) of their particular area of the sport,and I find them tunnel visioned and boring. Now the reason for writing this. Your comments about drivers diversifying to other disciplines bought back memories from my childhood .In the 1960's we had a series of races in New Zealand and Australia called the Tasman Series,which were held during the european winter, and it attracted almost the entire F1 grid for that year! Every hero I had ever read about was there, from Stirling Moss in the early days to Jimmie Clark,Jack Brabham, John Surtees,Bruce McLaren,et al,and my particular favorite Chris Amon.They raced in what were basically F1 cars fitted with 2.5litre engines. 4 races in NZ AND 4 in Aust. I only went to 2 meetings in 67 68 at my local track, Pukekohe Park in Auckland. To be track side watching all my heroes of the day thundering by was an incredible thing and led me on a lifelong love affair with the sport.At the end of each series the drivers would head back to Europe and tune up for the F1 season driving everything from touring cars to Can Am monsters! My point is, these guys would go anywhere, drive ANYTHING,and do very well, what ever they drove.I believe drivers today focus too much on one thing and lack the scope of skills these earlier driver accrued. Variety is the spice of life...... Love your channel, keep the quality coming.

1. Lap times--- Honestly, I think the lap times in general show that both drivers are often underrated. To adapt that quickly to a car you've never driven (and for Johnson, on a completely new track) just goes to show that people seem to forget Alonso really is *that* good, and that Johnson is more than a one-trick pony. 2.Driver swaps are pretty much a win-win for all involved. The drivers have fun, *2* different series get good PR, and fans tend to love this sort of thing as well. Other than it being expensive to do, there's really not a downside. 3. Random thought: with all that Alonso has set out to win the endurance triple crown, plus the general motorsports triple crown, maybe he's also considering trying to join Mario & AJ as the only drivers to have won both the iNDY 500 & the Daytona 500? Stranger things have happened.

While we'll never see the amount of interdisciplinary driver crossover that we did in the '50s and '60s, it does seem like it's on the rise again. Also worth noting that Bill Elliott also shared a GTO class Roush Mustang with Ricky Rudd at Sebring in 1986 (the last year of the really long layout that used the north/south runway)...and they finished 5th overall! And one of their GTO opponents in that race? An Olds Calais driven by Terry Labonte and the Parsons brothers (Benny and Phil).

Between his off-road experience and limited stints in a dirt late model for the Prelude to the Dream, I think he would do well. Chase on the other hand . . . Ugh. He won't do it, probably contractually can't do it, and having been groomed specifically for NA$CAR, wouldn't have the feel or talent for it. 2 tenths off of Alonso on his first day is very impressive. Obviously those two tenths are what makes the difference, but that's already about as good as Alonso's teammate in F1 (former team mate now) Stoffel Vandorne. And he rose up through the ranks of the open wheel sub categories. So that's very impressive and it goes to prove what I've always said : F1 drivers aren't always the best drivers in the world, sometimes they're just the best drivers among the Rick people who could actually pay their way into the open wheel racing. They're a lot of talent out there that never got to sit in an open wheel car.

- Also, I HAVE to point out that, unlikely as it may sound, I very much doubt Fernando has EVER been in a 2013 McLaren before - even if he has, it won't be for anything more than an orientation drive. This is not to take anything away from Johnson's 2/10ths off! Two tenths off ALONSO!? Fooof... credit where it is due. Juan Pablo Montoya has left the chat.

If Johnson got within a second I'd of been mightily impressed, 2 tenths is stunning!. Alonso wouldn't have gone easy on him either, part of the reason Alonso wanted to do this is he'd get to drive the V8 again so he'd be going for it.

Lol if Alonso had actually pushed his laptimes he would have been more than 6 seconds faster maybe even 7

So instead of going for the triple ( Monaco, Le Mans, Indianapolis ) Fernando throws in Daytona for the Grand Slam?
@kg0173

I always thought the triple was Monaco (F1), Indy 500 (IndyCar) and Daytona 500 (NASCAR). Nobody has won it.

@@kg0173 L. M. A. O. Daytona 500 over Le Mans? Bahahaha The Daytona 500 started in 1959, while Le Mans has been going since 1923, your crappy oval races interest nobody outside of the US of ASS.

I think Mario Andretti came close. He won the Daytona 500 in 1967 and he won the Indy 500 in 69??? And he has won an f1 title. Don’t know about lemans.

@@todd_gilliland335 Mario hasn't won Monaco GP. Montoya has, but hasn't Daytona 500. His best finish there was 6th. Mario's best finish at Monaco GP 5th. Montoya has won 2 Indy 500's and 1 Monaco GP. Mario just 1 Daytona and 1 Indy. I don't understand why people throw in the WDC? Then what about IndyCar and NASCAR championship? In that case only Montoya, Jaques Villeneuve and Mario have won IndyCar and F1 titles and Tony Stewart is the only one who has won IndyCar and NASCAR titles. Montoya's best result in NASCAR championship was 8th. Looks like he is the only one who has seriously attempted the feat. Mario never ran a full season in NASCAR. It seems NASCAR championship/Daytona win is the most difficult of all to get.

@@charles-antoinemartel-roy Oval racing better tests drivers ability, ability to adapt, ability to race in very close format. Lemans is just an engineering excercise, almost like F1 where engineers and car builders do the most of the work, driver or his skills doesn't mean much. Put F1 back in drivers hands and their races would be like NASCAR roadcourse races, no way one driver would win 10+ races in 20 race season. Impossible.

I was reading an article about the JJ and ALO seat swap and it said that when Johnson came out for the first stint in ALO car he noticed that his helmet was lifting up and the team had to put the wind screen on his mclaren but idk if it’s a reliable source

I was fortunate enough to be at the Tony Stewart and Lewis Hamilton Watkins Glen seat swap. I believe ESPN had an hour long show on it. Will they be doing the same for this seat swap?

It would be interesting to see what Alonso would do in nascar. The last few open wheel drivers didn’t really get a fair shake. Juan Pablo and Dario were the two prominent drivers to make the jump but they were on a Ganassi team that wasn’t remotely close to what they are today. If Alonso is in quality equipment it would be very interesting

If Alonso was in quali mode and mindset, Jimmy Johnson is faster than most of the f1 grid, that would be amazing. Also, really really hoping to see Alonso at a few Indycar road or street races, even more so than the indy500. Heck, maybe he'll be like Schumi back in the day or like Rubens this year and race karts with us at the Skusa Super Nationals (karting) in Las Vegas (Rubens finished 8th and I think Michael finished 8th or 13th, I can't remember).
