Now this is country I can get into. Classic country is fantastic. Everything in the genre these days is so "America ra ra ra!". It's sad because it can be so much better than it is. Maybe it's just me, but that's how I see it at least.

I agree 100% with you. Classic country is much, much better than today's "country", if you can even call today's country "country".

I sure miss my daddy. But he's gone. We both loved Jimmie Rodgers and now I think of him and this song. I wish I could head down that old road to home and have Dad be still sitting in his chair and we could listen to Jimmie Rodgers records again. Tears as I type.

My Dad has been gone since 1991. Jimmy's music always reminds me of him. Dad was a true blue fan of his. He wasn't into frivolous things but he had a collection of old 10in records of Jimmie Rodgers he bought after he returned home from the war in the pacific in the Marine Corps in 1946. Pop truly loved his music.

I have the entire jimmie rodgers sog book collection, he is credited with writting this song. but jimmie himself often said he had heard many songs, or parts of for years, and they belonged to the rural folk of the old days, so who knows on most of them. but being the father of coutry music, he lived the songs he sang, and never forgot his rural, poor roots, especially the hard times and good music.

0:18 I am dreaming tonight of an old Southern town And the best friend that I ever had For I've grown so weary of roaming around I'm going back home to my dad 0:42 Your hair has turned to silver I know you're fading too Daddy, dear ol' Daddy I'm coming back to you 1:06 You made my boyhood happy But still I longed to roam I've had my way, but now I'll say "I long for you and for home" 1:42 Dear ol' Daddy, you shared my sorrows and joy You tried to bring me up right I know you'll still be just one of the boys So I'm starting back home tonight 2:07 You made my boyhood happy But still I longed to roam I've had my way, but now I'll say "I long for you and for home"

My Grandaddy, Jim Gilbert, worked with Rodgers on the Railroad while passing through Mississippi. Rodgers asked him to go on the road and play harmonica, but my Grandma wouldn't let him because old Jimmie liked to tip the bottle. I feel like Jimmie Rodgers inspired me as a musician, passed down through my Grandaddy and my MOTHER, who could also play blues guitar. RIP

@loookehere For standard tuning it's C-G7-C-F-C-D7....adding a 7th (like C7) can also work. The recording here is a bit higher in key so it may sound a bit off, but it still works. You can always tune the guitar up a bit to be in the same key with Jimmie. Keep on strummin'.

I think I like this best of all theone's posted. Sad that he never made any money from all of his songs. Clint Eastwood made a picture about a " lunger" who sang as long as he could and died after his last song was sung. It was called "Songwriter", probably his best picture.

I know this is an old post, but I really want to recommend Corb Lund to you. I realize he is a newer artist(within the last 10 years), and Canadian on top of that. But I really believe he has the heart that the old boys did. Listen to This Is My Prairie, a song about a small time farmer and the pressure and oppression of the oil industry. A true and heartfelt story.

Percy Shaw Sorta, but not really, it was like a weekly show they would play in cinemas, back then having a T.V. was reserved for the rich, than having a coloured T.V. was rich, until recently have a flatscreen T.V. was for the rich, now have a 4k Smart T.V. is for the rich.

No one had a TV when this was made, because Jimmie Rodgers died in 1933. By the early to mid 1950s lots of households had TV, but only a few had color TV, and most shows weren't broadcast in color anyway. TV technology existed when this was shot, but not for consumers. World War II put the brakes on production of luxury consumer goods. After the war, though, TV started appearing in lots of bars in the late 40s, mostly showing boxing, professional wrestling, and old westerns.
