He was very lucky he wasn't sent off. I remember watching this interview years ago and agreed with Jimmy Hill. That tackle resonated throughout the rest of Gazza's career.

Exactly, listening to Jimmy Hill and Des Lynham converse is almost calming, they listen to one another, they do not speak over one another, there are no "sound bite" comments being made. They are conversing in full sentences and allowing one another the time and grace to construct their thoughts - so as to provide a full and coherent explaination of their understanding of the game. This is how men speak. Nowadays, MOTD is like a bunch of lads down the pub - rowdy, rawkus, rude, bad-mannered, and impatient.

@@annonymous3948 It gets worse every year. I'd rather spend an hour watching a plank warp rather than listen to Murphy and Shearer droning on. Richards just comes across as a bunny on acid. Bring back Derek Doogun and Cloughie.

Agree that Hill was a wonderful pundit, very unfairly maligned at the time, and these clips on KZitem show how he had great insight. He’s right about Clough here: he should have addressed the players before extra time. But he does not put enough emphasis on the big stonking factor in this game: Gascoigne should have been sent off.

I agree Gazza was lucky not to be sent off but the other key decisions went against Spurs; Forest's goal should not have been allowed for a foul on Mabbutt; Lineker was on side when he scored and the keeper should have been sent off when he conceded the penalty.

It breaks my heart that Forest of this period (87-92) did not win the FA Cup. They were probably the third best team in England over those years; they finished third a couple of times and won the League Cup twice; they played with style and consistently polished diamonds who were sold to bigger clubs. Two semi-final defeats by Liverpool and one final defeat by Spurs.

Referee Milford admitted later he wanted to send Gazza off, but the delay caused by his injury and treatment, made him hesitate and didn't sen him off. In fact for the earlier tackle itself, Gazza with the high boot should have gone. Scant consolation to Forest. Had they been 1-0 up and correctly against 10 men, I think Clough would have got his FA Cup. To add insult Gazza's sub, Nayim would play a pivotal role in Spurs triumph. I don't think Nayim would be fielded had Gazza gone.

The excuse that Roger Milford did not send Gazza off because he felt sorry for him on the stretcher was a pathetic dereliction of duty. If only Gazza had gone to Man United and not Spurs, that house for his parents may have been a price too much. Venebles indulged him rather than control him.
