Yes, people knew about allegations. Very few people actually knew whether there was any truth to it. People didn't dare try to speak about it because Savile was in a position of power and could very easily suppress anything they had to say. We can't blame people like Frank Skinner, Ian Hislop etc for not speaking out - they didn't have any evidence and Savile would have just denied the accusations. The abused were far too scared to say anything about him whilst he was alive as well, it was only after his death that they felt able to. The ONLY people we should blame for not blowing the whistle are the ones who enabled it - producers who got him the girls and turned a blind eye etc.

Well I must have been the naïve 1% in that case. Even after his reported death, I never took anything claimed about him at face value. Am I/was I ever a fan of him or his programmes? No. I thought that Jim'll Fix it was as cheap and tacky as Blue Peter, and I never once laughed at anything he had to say. Remember what was said about Adolf Hitler after his reported death? It's taken over three quarters of a century, but gradually, more and more people are asking the sorts of questions that were not allowed to be asked in public for all those years before. The questions that can't be asked now (about Saville): "How can you condemn a (reportedly) dead man with circumstances that may or may not be able to provide a latter revision of what is believed about him?" "How do you know that this isn't just a campaign to scapegoat Jimmy Saville because of sobering mainstream media sensationalism on the subject after decades of casually "joking" about the matter of sex with people under a particular age?" "What's with the schizophrenic social attitude change toward Jimmy Saville, and the complete absence of critical questioning about the validity of what it is that's being put to the public, and how they're being expected to address it?" What I'm asking, is this... Is what is being alleged about Saville, based on sound, scrutinous verifiable evidence, or is it based on a collective compulsion to agree that he is DEFINITELY a deceitful villain, lest any sceptics be labelled paedophiles and socially outcast themselves for calling an account "everyone agrees with", into question???

No, there's a difference between hearing rumours from friends and colleagues that may or may not be true, and actually having hard conclusive evidence for those rumours. Guys like Baddiel and Skinner who were BBC presenters clearly only heard the rumours, and they certainly weren't in positions of power to actually do anything even if they were part of a cover-up. Higher ups in the BBC would've definitely known though and they're the ones who should be blamed.

Women are always made fun of as girls, no wonder they didn’t come forward and are only just finding their voices now. I've never understood the British attitude of some people being held in such reverence as to be untouchable. I recently saw some clips of Mary Whitehouse, with people pleading for her not to get their favourite songs/tv shows banned. No one ever seemed to have thought, "why don't we tell her to rack off?" The same with Saville. Common knowledge he was a monster, but nothing done.

mikelheron20 Rumours. The amount of rumours in this industry persisted for years. if looks and smells like Shit it most likely is John Lydon was effectively banned from British TV for actually voicing what many know but the establishment refused to do anything .
@mikelheron20

Patch the-first Johnny Lydon voiced a suspicion. A suspicion isn't evidence. Savile wasn't completely stupid. He didn't do what he did in plain view. He managed to fool a lot of people. That's not evidence of a conspiracy or a cover up. it just shows that Savile was good at covering his tracks. For some people the mere accusation is enough to establish guilt. Fortunately we still work on the basis of presumption of innocence in this country.

In those days and years before the image of a "dirty old man" was a comical figure portrayed throughout the history of movies and theatre comedy acts. This made anyone in normal life with similar traits acceptable in society. "Oh don't worry about him..... he's just a dirty old man" So as a result anyone objecting to this behaviour was regarded as causing trouble that society didn't need. It was only when enough people complained and reported that it became in the interest of society for us to change what we thought was acceptable. Thus society learns and grows throughout history.

The late terry wogan said in a interview when this came out that at a charity event at the BBC premises in 1998. Wogan was talking to a daily mirror columnist. Savile was sitting on the opposite table. Then savile got up to go to the toilet. As he went in. The mirror columnist looked at savile and then turned to wogan, and asked him. ''when are him and his lot were going to expose savile''. And wogan said back to the columnist ''that's your lots job''

I remember doing the makeup for a person 14 years ago, and we started speaking about the BBC, and he stated that he knew of someone who worked high up who told him that the pedophile ring was on the verge of being exposed in the mid 90's by none other than Princess Diana & Jill Dando. Both were patrons of a children's charity/charities and both knew of the horrific goings on, but they knew they would become a target. He went on to say that they were both killed to silence them. Diana always knew they were after her. He mentioned so many peoples names, and at the time I didn't and couldn't believe him. Shocking when the allegations turned out to be true and some of the names he mentioned were being reported in the press.
