Growing up in Erie, PA in the mid to late 1960s it was impossible to get away from CKLW. On the beach, cruising in my sister's 57 Chevy on State Street, at the dock... every radio was tuned to CKLW and usually full blast! I still have a love for Motown, the Red Wings and drag racing under the lights. Thanks for the great memory!

If anybody listens to Pat St John on Sirius XM radio on Channel 6, you’ll notice that he pretty much uses the same underlying background music and announcer jingles as they used to use on CKLW (no surprise there since he was a DJ on that station for a short period of time in the end of the 60’s)

As a child in the late 60's, it was a hobby of mine to stay up late and see how many AM radio stations I could receive, and log their call letters and where they were from. CKLW was a regular, always coming across clearly (though if I turned the radio in a different direction, I'd pick up Transworld Radio broadcasting on the same frequency (800) from Bonaire in the Netherlands Antilles). I remember these jingles well. Thanks for putting them together. It brings back memories.

I was a little white kid in a Northwestern Ohio farm town near Toledo and CKLW, the Motor City was the jingle always on our radios. When FM started to broadcast in the area circa 1976, I had zero interest because it wasn't my kind of music. I had no idea that Motown music wasn't the standard everywhere. My family moved to Texas and until now I never heard the CKLW announcement again. Twenty five years later I met my best friend at the Customs Service academy and we were both Navy vets. We were all asked to introduce ourselves to the class and when my row of desks finished we took a break. She tapped me on the shoulder and told me we were going to be friends. She was from Detroit and I gave her a big smile and sang the CKLW jingle to her. She nearly fell over and we've been besties for almost 30 years now.

Loved your story!! I’m from Marion, OH, which was pretty white too, but all of us kids in the late ‘60s-‘70s thought Motown was right up there with the classic rock bands on “CK,” as we called it. I was just listening to The Temptations earlier today, dancing around my kitchen! What great, great music back then. I actually just went to Detroit to see The Rolling Stones on 11-15-21. Some of the band and staff members went to the Motown Museum the day before the concert. 👍🏻😊 The Stones did their version of Ain’t to Proud to Beg the next night at Ford Field, with Mick paying homage to both Motown and the Temps before launching into the song. ❤️🎵🎶

There wasn't and still isn't a better radio station than the BIG 8. I grew up on WKNR and was a faithful listener of Scott Regen's. When he moved to the BIG 8, I moved with him. They had these great jingles, the jocks and the music. Detroit radio had never seen anything like it before and within a few weeks, the BIG 8 was the number 1 station. CanCom ruined the BIG 8 with its Canadian format (so many Canadian songs per hour), but in its hey day, there was nothing like it in radio. 50,000 watts of power and it went to many other states and provinces.

Their news was always about gruesome murders and crime, which in a macabre way was entertaining. Yikes! I LOVED CKLW! I grew up in Marion, OH, and we got it all day, but it turned to static at night so we listened to two stations from Chicago - WLS and WCFL. I think it was CFL who played Wolfman Jack’s show. I was still a huge Top 40 fan back in the mid-70's. On afternoon roadtrips between White Plains, NY and Danbury CT, I could pick up CKLW (with decent signal strength) on a short stretch of I-684 near Goldens Bridge, NY: roughly 500 nautical miles from Windsor. As best I can remember, the station could be heard year-round at that same point on the Interstate, but for no more than half a minute. It's said that folks in California occasionally hear the Big 8 skip over the Rockies in winter. A broadcast engineer told me that the propagation characteristics of five-tower directional arrays (like CKLW's) are not entirely understood
@ApartmentKing66

I was never able to pick up CKLW due to XEROK in Ciudad Juarez, across the river from El Paso. It was one of those "border blasters," so CKLW, like WHO and others, never made it out to me in California.

CKLW kid here, growing up in Lake Orion, Michigan, a Detroit suburb in the 1970's. My favorite DJ's were Walt "Baby" Love, Dave Schaffer, Tom Shannon, Bill Gable, Frank Brodie, & Big Jim Edwards. The radio consultant was the late Rosalie Trombley, who picked the hits and was the first (Canadian) female radio consultant hired in 1968. Jo-Jo in her helicopter did the weather news and was memorable, too.

@NDXUFan I have heard KHJ and it was pretty good but CKLW was the best and at one time was the number one station in Detroit, Cleveland and Akron, Ohio at the same time. It spanned 27 states and 4 provinces in Canada at night and had 50,000 watts. Canadian content laws eventually killed this powerhouse radio station but fortunately we can still hear the jingles and their great DJ's through KZitem and people like fansofjingles posting them.

@taxcl I don't remember them ever saying they were in Detroit...the closest I remember was "the Motor City" and that was because Windsor, even though across an international border, is still part of the Detroit market, making CKLW, in effect, a Detroit station. And you never heard "CKLW Windsor" as a legal ID because the Canadian Radio and Television Commission doesn't require a community of license after the call letters like the FCC does in the U.S.
