I believe it's just a variation on top of their song Backtrack. Might be influenced by another song but none that I would recognize.

Funkiest drummer Lonnie played with as well IMO. When I went to see him in London he had Xavier Breaker who was also excellent but this guy really cooks.

Versatile setlist of originals. Lonnie always remembers his roots musically and then will go into the future possibilities musically..his way. That's what the music should be about and not caring if popular or not! Lonnie has nothing to prove andhe knows that. Great gig Lonnie. MM We did 17 days in Spain bro with Lou!

"Dr." Lonnie Smith can stop screwing around with his music and get to playing his ax. His cute improvisation here and on other recorded music is a DISTRACTION.

I do partly agree with this. Pretty much every time Lonnie played a set he fiddled around with that intro to Backtrack. He seemed to really enjoy experimenting with synths and drum machines in later years and it wasn't always brilliant. The synth he's playing over the first part of Jonathan's solo is as you say, distracting. Fortunately he seemed to realise this and stopped doing it after a few bars. I don't think Lonnie ever knew exactly how he was going to start that tune - he made it up as he went along! That was the eccentricity of the man. Much of what he created was inspired so I guess you have to take the rough with the smooth.
