JL Amps are solid.. I love the fact that the higher end ones maintain the same power output regardless of the Ohm Rating...

I have this amp on my boat, it blasts your eardrums apart running four 6.5’s off the two main channels and a 12w6v3 on the sub channel at two ohms. It rocks all day long in the heat and keeps thrashing. Worth every penny.

This is the amp I'm using currently.Running Polk 5.25 components and a Kicker ported 12.It really is all the power I need but I love car audio and there is always more to be had.Would love to get another one of these,another Kicker sub and another set of the same components and basically double the power. One other thing about the main channels.The manual only recommends running 2 ohms in stereo.It warns against bridging those channels into a 2 ohm load.Bridging into 4 ohms is fine.

Just hit 11yrs and >275k in my daily beater 2013 Corolla with this amp running a C5-650 component set and HO110RG(HO box w/a 10W3V3-2) off an Alpine HU. I'd been mixing and matching higher end stuff since the 80s, but through auditioning everything I could get my ears on, had discovered a preference for both JL's higher end separates and practically all of their subs due to whatever combination of tonal qualities made them sound "better" to me. The XD500/3 was my first amp from JL, though. Kept it conservative, wanting plenty of headroom, and was still getting 365-380w to the sub when I checked it with various test tones. That little system has always sounded fantastic, and is probably the first I didn't immediately want to upgrade, in spite of it being so small and "underpowered"(when you're used to having 1200+ just for subs, 500 total seems drastically underpowered!). Not only has every component stood the test of time, I actually think it sounds better than ever(though the HU's DSP features may deserve credit for that). Gotta love high quality gear that seems to last forever when properly installed and set up. Additional shoutouts to the car having 0 issues in that time, along with the 37 year old AudioControl 2XS I use instead of the onboard low pass to have a subsonic filter with the ported box.

@DamonMEA If this amp is built anything like the Slash 450/4, then it has dual independant power supplies. Had Shawn King repair my 450/4 that had the 75 watt channels not working and he is an amp GURU and was the one who told me about the dual power supplies, which was why the other 2 150 watt channels on the amp stayed working when the other sides(75 watt channels) power supply died. JL makes some innovative, high quality gear. I love my 1000/1 and 450/4, so much so that I bought a second of each amp as backups. @BigD, can you do a dyno on the 1000/1 and 500/1. The 500/1 is a must since it's now the best selling amplifier of all time.
@DamonDupriez
9 жыл бұрын
Love your work BigD but you may have made a major error during this review. Does the amp use a shared power supply stage between the three channels? If so your results will be incorrect and the output will be measurebly lower when all channels are running - which is the case in real world conditions. I've never seen you test any other amplifier without all channels loaded, so why should this one be treated differently?
@sergiocuevas7589

DamonMEA I had this amp running a p3d410 and a pair of components. But I hated the SQ on on the full range channels (class D). After switching to class A/B for full range, I left the 500/3 to run a sundown sd310 at 1ohm!! This amp turned from an average sub amp into a headlight flickering beast! Did the whole power supply switched to full low pass mode? I’m an installer and I’ve heard tons os 500 watt amps and this feels more powerful

I CANNOT find ANYWHERE on the Net with these results. I'm not asking you to do a video on something like this because it's not old school, but in your personal time if you anyone who may have one to test, or have tested one already. I contacted JLA about the bench test results for this amp, but they gave me the company speak, so I am back to square one. Oh, I also have a JL Audio 10TW1-2 Micro-Sub Enclosure with which I'm going to purchase the JLA XD300/1v2 amp for that sub. Is there any Dyno tests for that amp you think out there? I'm curious if you thought about loading down the front channels while doing the 1 ohm test Just a thought I wonder if it would affect the output Besides drawing the input voltage down.... I feel as though it's a single power supply amp, With the front channels loaded down the power supply wouldn't be able to keep up My assumption would be that the output falls on its face to a measly 400watts at 1ohm compared to what it did with the front channels unloaded Just a thought Have a good day
@wal
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I thought about this and I'm sure it would make a difference, but I need to test to find out. The Dyno uses a 40Hz test tone for the subwoofer test, so this frequency would not be utilized by the front channels during the test as they would be crossed over higher. I'm still sure the actual load of the speakers would affect output though as you mentioned, the power supply is shared between all 3 channels.

I have a Fluke ScopeMeter 105B II - it has a setting where I can test wattage. I don't know how my instrument varies from that massive d'amore instrument you have but everything in my vehicle is 4Ohms so I set it to 4Ohm on my ScopeMeter and on my HD1200/1 I get 1360w - on my HD600/4 I only get the rated 150w on each channel but when I bridge the rear channel I get 660w.
@wal
7 жыл бұрын
You can't use speakers, you need resistors to test wattage...unless you have an AMM-1 from D'Amore/SMD which is able to take the phase shift of the non-resistive loads into account
@micksreviews

I never said I was using speakers. I'm using a Fluke ScopeMeter 105B II. You can set the resistance on the meter itself.

If you measure with no load, this is known as "unloaded" voltage and does not mimic the amplifier's power using a load. You will always get a higher measurement unloaded
@micksreviews
7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know a speaker has to be hooked up. Similar to if you're clamp testing. My meter, if I'm not mistaken, mimics the load by setting the resistance internally. It seems to be deadly accurate. I'll have to call Fluke tomorrow and ask I guess.

Emmitt Bishop you get what you pay and with JL that's a lot as far Orion, JL kills them in sound and build quality , beadroom, THD and S/N ratio, damping factor and ultra wide bandwidth starts at 8Hz, just because something has more claimed power does not mean it's better some of JL's amps have 0.03 THD vs 10% for the cheap stuff...Hands down JL Audio is the company all others try to mimic, and JL's sound quality are hard to beat for the money before diminishing returns kick in!
