As a math teacher of 22 years, I highly recommend Barbara Oakley's approach to help students find success and satisfaction in Math. Algebra matters. Quality direct instruction matters. Systematic practice matters.

Jo Boaler sounds like she has a chip on her shoulder. If students in the US are failing, and if our math crisis is due to math classes being “boring, procedural, and full of rote calculations”, then why are other countries succeeding in math with said boring, procedural and rite learning calculations?

lolllll , i know why it is failing..... its not because of it is boring , it is not logical , i explained a bit on my subtraction . I can change the whole system if the country believes in me . and not all people can learn mathematics ....... ppl who have lower IQs are not able to do it to be honest . As math requires to see and think multiple ways and there are different skillsets ...... So basically , she is not seeing the problems in the kids point of view .......

Too many theories and bullet points. I would like her to teach a real math subject. Can she explain "Cheryl's birthday" in her own creative way?

I just finished a grad class based on her book Mathematical Mindsets. Real good stuff! This is just a little intro. Go ahead and watch more of her videos to see what she's put together. I'm integrating some of these things into my middle school classes - it's effective!

Start a Math Revolution. Agreed, but let us start by learning some math in the first place.
