Hello. I'm Joan. And this book is called Horse by Geraldine Brooks. It's a wonderful mix of history and fiction and art and science. And it tells the story of one of the world's greatest racehorses in that in the 1850s in Kentucky, there was a young stallion named Darley. And he was trained and cared for by a young black slave named Jarrett and his dad. And they had great dreams for his future. But then a bunch of really nasty white guys came along and managed to buy Darley from under their noses. And with it, they also bought Jarret, who then found himself miles away from home and family still trying to care for this horse. Back at the time, there was quite a trend for equine paintings to be done. And there were a number of paintings of Darley, who was renamed to Lexington by his white owners. And that painting or one of them surfaced in fifties New York City when an art Gallery owner got her hands on it. And then again in 2019 when a young man looking after a neighbour found it in the trash outside her house. As always, Geraldine Brooks does a wonderful job of the storytelling. and this is a mixture of obsession and slavery and racism and history. And I absolutely adored it.
