Hello I'm Joan and this book is called Southern Man by Greg Iles. He writes terrific books set in Natchez Mississippi which is actually the town where he lives. And this one is set 15 years after the last book which was called Natchez Burning. His books are set in an American South which is still divided along racial lines with an anguished history which it's still trying to come to terms with. Now malevolent forces are at work. There's a tinder box of racial tension in Natchez. And there's a US third party presidential candidate who wants to take over the country but has his own really ugly agenda and isn't acting at all in the best interests of the country. Penn Cage has been the mainstay character throughout these Mississippi stories. He's a lawyer and the former mayor of Natchez is determined to do everything he can to stop the racial tension in his town as America starts to look as though it's about to implode. Greg Iles is absolutely in control of his extraordinary stories. This book runs to around 1000 pages and I absolutely devoured it.
