This album gets my vote for THE most underrated record of the 90s. I'm not sure there's a better debut album by anyone that decade, and IMO Joan's integrity's as an artist is enduring.

Screw anyone talking about her addiction on here blah blah blah. Take your own inventory. She was a genius artist and her life was dedicated to her raw talent for blues and torch songs that transcended genre. None of you can imagine singing in front of 100,000 people. She had intense insecurity about performing. I think she’s brilliant.

This (album) mix is so much better than the 3-4 live recordings I just went through, as Joanie's voice is more forward, and the singular string instrument (mandolin?), than the live ones, which mishmashed everything into a sonic lump. Given the pathos of her voice here, that is some loss. Sheeesh. LOVE THIS.

+William Slater In 1999 I received the gift of rapture. My guardian angel, Jeremiah is who I believe did the work, my godmother the praying. One of my guardian angels bathed a book in dazzling light for me at the library, Expecting Adam by Martha Beck. She had an OBE too, just like mine, "My identity was lifted out of me." Later I borrowed a book on the writings of St. Teresa of Avila. I experienced what she did after reading about it, my spirit bouncing around inside of my body. At the time of my rapture I was spending 8 hours a day in prayer/meditation and was listening to a lot of Joan Osborne, her song ladder leads me to believe she's Pentecostal like I am, "I'm crackin' your little code I'm learnin' another language So full it's about to explode"My son Jason was born on All Hallows Eve, the next day being all saints day, and we have a cross on Mt. Rubidoux. My dad put it on the mountain with a USN rescue helicopter. Jason was born around the same time Fr. Junipero, the man the cross is named for, was beatified. He's now a Saint. You believe what you want my friend, faith and love conquers all.

Joan explained the video in her VH1 special: It's about a woman she knew who found legitimate work as a maid, but would always fall to the wayside due to her drug habit, and eventually turned to prostitution to survive. Joan said that despite her personal struggles, the woman always had a sunny attitude and held on to her Catholic upbringing. Joan started calling her "St. Teresa" as a result, and the nickname stuck. That's why the video contains religious iconism (lambs and levitation, the latter being the real St. Teresa's first miracle of sainthood), plus sexual references, as well as numerous drug references (grass carpet, body turning into flowers, heartbeat strawberry, etc).
