James Kalm wheels into Chelsea for this, the third exhibition of Joan Snyder's work at Betty Cuningham. A recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship's "Genius Award", Snyder has been a respected presence on the New York painting scene since the early seventies. Her impassioned use of rugged materials such as branches, flower stalks, dirt and fabric give her paintings a facture reflective of raw nature, rather than a mere allusion of it. Despite the brusqueness, there is a sensual and joyful playfulness to these paintings displayed in the rich palette and varied surfaces used by the artist.
