From the first sound out of this great diva's mouth, I'm startled as if for the first time hearing her, by the size and beauty of her voice. This last time I heard her, in the House, a late-career Puritani, my reaction was the same but more so-....her voice, heard immediately on her entrance, simply flooded the entire theater...

I just had the same suprise. The recording just started on my computer by chance. I was not looking, I was busy doing something else. And upon hearing that voice I stopped, saying to myself that voice is pure perfection and I went and looked and it was Joan Sutherland to whom I had not listened for years and I thought waouh! she is really unique. And remains unique in spite of so many fantastic singers one can hear today. Years and years ago, I was 18 years old, I used to listen almost exclusively to Maria Callas. In my opinion, no one could rival with her. With one exception! And that was Joan Sutherland. 55 years later I still feel the same... The same emotion...

With Callas in this aria you get goosebumps and tears in your eyes, as she reveals the pathos of her entrapment; with Sutherland we hear deliciously floating notes devoid of the unfolding drama. Sutherland herself has said, during her talk at Wollongong University, that you go to the Opera to listen to a voice and that if you need dramatic performance one ought to go to the theatre! How wrong is that! Opera is vocal acting, and that is why Callas is not Callas, she was not projecting “Callas” but became the embodiment of Tosca, Violeta, Lucia, Norma, Anna Bolena, Rosina etc. Having said this, when Sutherland’s singing was not cutting out all the consonants, and when one does not seek a profound characterisation, Sutherland did have an angelic voice, so suitable for church masses…

It's ridiculous to even compare these magnificent sopranos! They were all equally great, and each one was unique, magnificent, and one of a kind. As with any artist, they had their strengths, they had their weaknesses. But they all made a huge mark in the world of opera. Brava Sutherland, Callas, Price, Caballe, Sills, and whoever else. Very beautiful rendition. Sutherland didn't get much involved in Puccini, singing only a Turandot on record, and a few Suor Angelicas in Australia. She wisely turned her attention to bel canto, but this clip shows that she could sing a beautiful Puccini line as well.

Tosca é pura paixão. Ciumenta, intensa, instintiva.

Try the movie I live for art. Vissi D'arte with all the greatest including Tebaldi, Callas, Albanese, Olivero and more, truly transporting. A must for all lovers of the aria. Cheers

Thanks for bringing these other Tosca’s up!! My favorite is Price! I forgot about Welitsch, of course Kiri (my cat’s namesake), I was introduced to opera with Callas doing Tosca (very dramatic, but I’ve always had trouble with her tone, couldn’t fault her interpretations though)! I’ll probably get backlash - Sutherland, Price, Te Kanawa, and Fleming are the most vocally beautiful in my estimation!
Interesting to hear JS sing Tosca - not her usual repertoire by any means! I think she does it rather well. But it is her stunning bel canto singing which sticks in the memory -was lucky enough to see her as Lucia at CG in the early 80s: she was just sensational. Her voice filled the house like no other I’ve heard.

What's wrong with giving credit to the music? Is this not opera? Sutherland gives feeling and emotion through her beautiful voice. There is not one voice in the recording archives as spectacular as her's. Didn't Pavarotti said that Sutherland is the voice of the Century? Of course, Callas is TOSCA. And Sutherland probably would not have been a complete Tosca had she sung the entire role. But here, she is spellbinding. As you know, Tito Gobbi wanted her to sing this role on stage with him.

***** My dear, name a single singer who can sing this with more beauty. I understand Callas sings this with soul. I just don't think her voice is quite as gorgeous as Joan's. The contest is her and Callas. Caballe is not even in the picture. I prefer Joan's opulent tone, but I respect Callas's before she started to wobble on the Bb. I know this is not a role that Joan can be stupenda. But she is quite enjoyable..

I honestly believe Price's Vissi D'arte was more beautiful. I respect that you are more passionate about and convinced of Sutherland's rendering. Just wanted to respectfully disagree that Sutherland had the "most beautiful and effortless high notes ever." In terms of Casta Diva, I call it a draw between Sutherland and Callad. Sutherland's is more beautiful in terms of pitch, but Callas sang it with more verve; I am literally more moved emotionally by Callas' performance. No question that Sutherland's is more beautiful. My Top 3 Sopranos are Callas, Sutherland, and Price.
