it might be a controversial opinion but I think that Joanna managed to even top ys with this album, it may not be perfect every second of its lenght like ys is, but HOOM feels so much bigger and grander and more honest and open with its lyrics.

just a little, but really interesting, easter egg: Joanna starts singing “cuckoo” in “In California” after exactly one hour from the start of the album. in fact she says “like a little clock that trembles on the edge of the hour”, and i think that it shows how structured the album is. In California also is placed in the middle of the album, and that represents the moment in a relationship when a person realizes that they have to move on. Have One On Me was initially a 2LP and In California was supposed to be the last song of the first disk (and Does Not Suffice is like its mirror). these details made me appreciate the song even more

I think one thing about it, why she focuses on the clothing items and jewelry is like, she's taking out the evidence of a woman living there with the man.... I think she's also trying to focus on these items of clothing that are very feminine and soft and luxurious and warm, in contrast to how he treated her.

Wow, here I am on my third comment -- one of my favorites, "You & Me, Bess" figured through the story of Dick Turpin and his stolen horse Black Bess, seems to address themes of being pulled in different directions, and into trouble, by warring factions within your own self, the idea of having contrary natures within oneself. Perhaps this theme resonates with how she and her husband are very private people who also lead public, performing careers ("I hold my own -- but you with your hunger, you on the other hand, make yourself known"). I feel as if the urge to perform their crafts of music and acting is that troublesome, attention-stirring horse. Also, love that you felt that line "I hope mother nature has not overheard, though she doles out hurt like a puking bird." The image of a mother bird feeding her young through regurgitation, nourishing through pain, like the Biblical image of the Pelican piercing its breast to feed its starving babies her own blood!

The spider imagery in the title track comes from the fact that Lola Montez was the first burlesque dancer whose popular routine involved shaking little plastic spiders out of her skirts. There's also the notion that the spider is a "creative" creature, spinning its web (and catching prey)! Of the song, she's said: "The general form for that song is supposed to be located at one moment in time inside the mind of that particular narrator, which is alternating between a fever and a breaking of the fever... so someone who is kind of ill, and narrating in that way, alternating between lucidity and then a more kind of scattered, hallucinatory narration." Newsom, interview on Triple J, 2010 So the song, in all, depicts Lola Montez on her deathbed, hallucinating, with her life flashing before her eyes. Newsom has also said, "I've always been fascinated by her, and in recent years, I found there was a parallel between what I do as a profession and what it meant to be a female artist at that time. I was noting the intersections between being a courtesan or a whore, and these professions that were socially looked down upon, the sort of professions that were basically creative."

Oh Fern, oh Fern..... I was so looking forward to this reaction of yours.. and it is incredible how fast you pick up on themes in the songs, admire the uniqueness and sheer lyrical genius that Joanna presents us with. She once said in an interview regarding her musical impact: "it seems like: they either love it or hate it.." I think that is so true... I was smitten with her work, the moment i was bitten.. lol ---- I am super amazed by your musical understanding, your style of listening and letting arrangements/lyrics "wash over"/enter you. No matter which genre, artist.. your openness to diffenrent styles and your interpretations hit the bulls eye - at least for me.. In that way you are one of my favourite music "mediums" here on YT. Thank you for this long long intense video - I had to prepare myself emotionally in advance.. Keep it on Fern - you really rock gal.

I finally found the time to watch the second half of your video. First of all let me say you are a legend for taking on this absolute beast of an album. I definitely think you made the right decision to split your listening into two sessions, this album is a lot to take in period, let alone on a first listen. I am mostly a metal fan, but Fiona Apple and Joanna Newsom are two of my favorite artists. It's funny how Fiona distills everything down to say so much with so few words, while Joanna uses ALL the words. Just two different forms of genius. So you've covered her middle two albums, you still have her debut (The Milk-Eyed Mender) and her newest (Divers) to look forward to. They are just as good but all of her albums are quite different from each other.

Also, your reading of "81" is so heartfelt as well as spot on! I believe she's alluding to her hometown of Nevada City, California as her Garden of Eden -- where she settled again after touring the Ys record, while writing this album, like a hermit (she's spoken of being forced by her bandmate to begin recording this album, that if it were up to her in that state of mind, these songs would have stayed private for a long, long time). The bit about "the war between St. George and the Dragon", the fans speculate this is an allusion to Noah GEORGEson (a former boyfriend and producer of her first album) and former lover Bill Callahan of the band Smog (the name of the dragon St. George battled was named Smaug). In this song, even they are welcome. And then, "the wandering eye" that's "hot as a wandering sun" sounds like an allusion to her famous husband! Then that tricky line -- "what is meant by sin, or none, in a garden seceded from the union in the year of AD 1": she was born in February of 1982, meaning she was conceived in 1981; so she spins a metaphor about living on her own in her hometown, "seceded" from the house of her parents, and fully leans into the Biblical imagery of the song by alluding to '81 as AD 1.

This album sounds more “flowy” than Ys. The reason being is that after singing such harsh sounds for years from the songs ys, she damaged her vocal cords in a way that her doctor wouldn’t recommend her to sing such way for her health. I’m quite sad but at the same time it makes ys more special, right? This is what happened to Björk as well.

HAHAHA not you just finding out she's married to Andy Samberg. She is definitely singing about Bill Callahan in Have one on me. She has a newer album after this one - Divers. She has new songs that she recently debuted live, and some fans have already documented all of the lyrics they could hear from the live recordings, and put them on Genius lyrics. As far as I know, there isn't even a new album release date yet. I think you would really like Divers, and I'd like to think you'd enjoy Milk-eyed Mender (her first full album) but at least you'd find it interesting?

Incredibly late comment, but just in case anyone stumbles on it: "Does Not Suffice" seems to be a direct answer to Bill Callahan's (who this song and album is about) song "All Your Women Things." Listening to those songs back to back is a heartbreaker.

I think you got it a bit backwards on In California. California is where Joanna is from. She had been away living in New York and touring before coming back home, and I think the song is probably about her love coming to visit her on her home turf (crossing the border of her heart) and sealing the deal. Just my interpretation, I don't mean this as a criticism at all.

Yes! I think this song addresses the anxiety of new love, while feeling scarred after a bad breakup. The line "another who is a little older" must refer to her brother, who is a little older. To remain near her loved ones, "in the spitting distance of the love (she) has known", she plants (and chokes) her roots on the earth of her hometown, although that may mean living like a hermit and experiencing some mental instability/the crazy that comes from being creative. Frequently, she describes sleeping all day and being awake all night. I feel as if the span of the second disc describes this new love, interrupted by the nightmare of "Go Long", and ends in a plea to her new lover on "Occident", where she sings, "darling, I can't go, but you may stay here with me." I also feel the "lover" that the songs address is not singular, but an amalgam of experiences. I've also observed that the second to last song on each disc involves a confrontation with a man of folklore: Johnny Appleseed, Bluebeard, and the Fisher King. I also think that "Have One on Me" and "Kingfisher" are inversions of each other in some way. It's interesting to note that Newsom stated in an interview that "Kingfisher" was the first song she completed writing for this record, and that the song "Have One on Me" was written during the mixing phase of Ys while she was on breaks in the studio. So the songs came into being around the same time. Wherein "HOOM" we have a sick woman on her deathbed, we have the narrator of "Kingfisher" addressing the castration anxiety of the man she sings to, asking that he not lie with her as if she were a little lamb, but to "lie with the lion" that is she.

Ys came out at 2006, her first work of art came out around early 2000, then Have one on me at 2010 and her latest Divers at 2015 ( then we have nothing left 😭 im dying waiting for her next music 🥹 ). Yea u cant imagine her being with Andy right ? 🤣 But actually Andy is a simp for her, he really loves and respects her. And he also was her huge fan, he came to her concert and met her there then they fall in love with each others. Im also glad and happy that she feel better now. But yeah she is no celebrity in her mind, she doesnt use any social media and rarely show up on any interview. So as fan of her, we just can wait and hope that shes doing fine now.
