i heard about joanna because i love brooklyn nine-nine and, in turn, andy samberg, but man do i wish i'd heard of her through something or someone other than her husband. i've just been spending the majority of the day discovering her music and her style and her lyrics and i can't say i understand any of it just yet but holy shit is it exquisite. unlike anything i've ever heard before. her voice is so strange yet so undeniable and i've just found myself gravitating toward it the whole day. my ears are so confused but i don't want to stop listening, not even for one second. it's unbelievable. i'm completely blown away.

I'm with you, Manasa. I only discovered her by chance, a half-hour or so ago. Pure talent is a rare power. Expression of that purity leaves one vulnerable, and self-awareness of that vulnerability can lead to self-consciousness, which dilutes that purity, or at least impedes its flow. That doesn't exactly express what I mean, but when speaking of art, words can only get you so close.

Her music and style are in a cryptic code which, on first listen, sounded impenetrable to me. However, I persevered and was rewarded with the most exquisite musical world I've ever experienced! My attitude towards music changed after discovering her and I found myself gravitating towards more lengthy, complex arrangements and shunning the "3 minute pop" format forever. She's unique!

I wouldn't say she's stopped making music, she became a mother for the first time a few years ago and if you listen to her lyrics motherhood is something that she has wanted for a very long time. I think when her daughter gets a little older she may return to music. She did a US tour shortly before Covid started and said at one of her shows that she has written a couple new songs

I often think of how I got to know about her in a very small window in my life when I was in job training. A guy who I met and hang out with for two weeks only gave me like 5 song recommendations of artists/bands he thought were unique and uncommon. One of them was Joanna Newsom's "Emily". This happened in 2010 and Have One On Me was the newest record she had so I went and got it. "Easy" is a really good song but it wasn't until I heard "Have One On Me" when I got absolutely charmed and knew I would listen to her music forever.
