Not everyone is welcomed in “certain fields”…. Wether it be because of family reputations, school reputations or your personality, mental and physical capacity - even your core values. Example: My husband has a hard time working with others because of his autism. He’s “stuck” with one employer who saw this and decided to put him on the job they had the hardest time keeping people on because of the isolation. He’s tried multiple time to get a higher paying job but he’d just burn out quickly because of all the social interaction. So he happily “stuck” with this one employer because they treat him with respect for doing the hardest job in their corporation.

Worked at a company and realized the new employees I was training were making more than me. I immediately asked for a raise and they promised me one in a few months. When a few months passed I asked where my raise was and they told me that actually they can’t give me a raise that high and sudden because it’s against their policy so I gave my two weeks notice right there and got another higher paying job lined up almost immediately. Changing jobs does not have to mean external moves. I’ve been with my company since I graduated college 8 years ago. In that time I’ve made a conscious effort to change roles every 1-2 years and been fortunate in that it has always been for growth opportunities. Next month I start my 7th position with the same company. On average, my compensation has risen 20% annually. To me, this is far more optimal than bouncing around, as I’m able to make meaningful connections that can help drive future growth. However, I now have a pretty sweet work schedule (Panama) and work remotely. Yea I get paid less, but I’m comfortable with my current pay and still able to save for retirement. I have no idea where that arbitrary figure comes from - it's just what I was told when I first started. It's probably different for each hiring company. But - if I compare candidate 1 with a job switch every 3 years vs a candidate with a job switch every 5 years - I go with the 5 year candidate because it's more stability for the company (assuming their skills are similar).

I've known people who went from representing one major cosmetic brand as a trainer, to another, then to a regional level retail trainer, then back to individual brand and they make more than they could've dreamed if they had stayed with the first or second company. Sometimes upward movement requires such moves. Again, it's trade specific, and none of the folks I know who have been successful at it have mentioned burn out because the changes keep things interesting and challenging. Some people need that to thrive. Of course, others need stability and don't like change. 🤷♀️ Personally, I would love a change, but it's a hard thing to manage even you lose momentum from a health crisis.

You're joking, but it's legit. What you can be getting paid at entry level jobs chances all the time too. My cousin started working at 16 at Wendy's for minimum wage (7 something bucks) then went to Walmart and made $9.50, then went to a moving company and made $12 an hour, then went to pest control and made $16 an hour and then went merchant seaman and makes $60k his first year. He's still merchant seaman and makes $100k a year. No schooling besides high school. I started working at Walmart for $9, I went to 7-11 for $10.50 then went to target for $15 and then went to a warehouse for $20 hr and I now make $25 an hour and again, no higher education but just job switching. I made $29k working at Target and 7-11 7 days a week ~55 hours a week to making $60k my first year at the wearhouse working 3-5 days a week 10-12 hour shifts (I averaged 48 hours a week my first year) and literally doubled my income. I made more in 2022 the 2020 and 2021 combined and I worked a lot more 20 and 21. I worked even less last year at the same wearhouse, no promotions just raises, and made $69k. Again, I work no more than 5 days a week, I'm guaranteed at least 2 days a week and 4 days off a week if I don't want overtime. 10-12 shifts and my checks are between 1,585 and $1,6something every week before tax. So yes you can move around on the entry level and still level up, it just so happens I've been at every job I mentioned for about 2-3 years each.

But it is considered a raise when your responsibility also increased? Wouldn't that mean you are just being paid for what you are doing now? I mean I work in customer service and my new job which also is under the same category now has more responsibility as I do handle company cash and other tools that require more responsibility on my side. I'm being paid well? Yes, compared to my last CC job. Would I consider a raise? @yogurLAPIZ
Жыл бұрын
@@gamebox8980 I would call that pay adjustment. Since it's not something related to your work or skills but more that the state or country you live in has raised the minimum pay to adjust to the price increase. I only consider a raise when they pay more for the same skills or job, like an offer from the company to you. You won't expect to be paid the same as an apprentice then when you are a manager. Otherwise people would not accept high responsibility jobs as you still would be paid the same as the people under you. For example in my company you have a raise yearly. Meaning you are still under the same job title but they do increase your pay depending on how they see your profile and contributions. This I would consider as a raise. Otherwise if the Spanish government decides to raise the minimum wage and so by doing this it will raise my pay I do not consider it as a raise because the company is abiding by law. It's my right not that they appreciate my job or work ethic. I think it is best to keep the differences because again, at the moment I'm being paid more than my prior job but I also have more responsibility and need more experience and need knowledge to use diverse tools. I would not be expected to be paid the same as before. If I start looking for new jobs I would not look into the same job title or requirements because now my profile has changed. If this person who made the comment decides to change company or bank they would be searching as a manager and even if they decided to post for a lower job title they would still be paid more than the current workers as they have experience on their belt as manager. If they apply as manager they would probably offer more as they have to settle some base for you to put their company above the others and this can only be done by money or benefits.

Grocery stores also offer raises every year and you can look for independent bakeries from then on that pay more.

I'm sorry. Age discrimination is a real thing and they bet on the person's fear of not being able to work elsewhere. It is still worth looking around quietly to see if the job can be replaced with higher pay. Promote your experience in life and don't disclose your current pay.

I assume you work in retail based on your comment? If so, I would second the advice of someone above me. Fancier stores pay better, especially if they are big companies (like Whole Foods, luxury retail or specialty shops like perfume, jewelry or electronics). Definitely don’t quit until you have secured another job. But it never hurts to look. It can be nice to visit some of these shops and ask if they are hiring and how the employees like working there. I did this and was given the direct contact of the manager who was impressed at my level of interest and quickly offered me the job. So yeah, it’s worth a try, it’s your life after all :)

that’s a very nice table you have there, only that the job loyalty doesn’t always work like that plus often times you won’t find a new job with a 15% raise. This is highly theoretical and only works for some people as well as only some fields.

Its good advice because its true if you are in a field that is competitive like being a attorney you can literally switch jobs and leverage your skills for higher pay. If your current employer doesn't want to match or compete with the other employer they lose their employee. The only thing is some people are happy making less because they like where they work but if money is your sole focus then this is a good idea.

Job hoppers in my day were people who couldn't keep a job. In the 60s and 70s many of us grew up thinking stay at the same place and they'll take care of you. Usually it was true. So I held my same blue collar job for 37 years This old dog wishes I would have changed jobs more often. There's no loyalty.

Overall the advice is good. Be loyal to yourself and always be on the lookout for a better opportunity. That said, it's not something you can really extrapolate like that (although I think the chart is just for demonstration not to be followed). There is nuance and variables. For one, at some point you are going to hit a ceiling unless you are in a competitive or highly skilled field. A run of the mill office worker is not gonna quadruple their salary over 20 years simply due to experience, bc the companies will just find someone cheaper. Good luck trying to get a 15% raise at 45 when a 30 year old making half is your competition. Another factor is companies may not care about job hopping for positions that are easily replaced, because if you leave you can find another person easily. But then you aren't getting big raises for that same reason. If you aren't easily replaced, and the company has to put time into training you or entrusts you with a lot of responsibility, they are going to value someone who shows commitment. If I'm looking to hire someone for the next 10 years, I'm not gonna hire the guy with 8 jobs in 20 years over the guy with 2. There is also the issue of fringe benefits. Some companies have options or defined benefit plans that require time to vest, so you might be getting more than simply 3% a year in raises. That's not to say you shouldn't be looking every few years, it just means you don't necessarily have to be jumping, and you shouldn't expect to quadruple your salary over 20 years as if this is a foolproof method.

It’s nice when you can find a company that values loyalty, it’s rare nowadays. My husband’s income has followed the trajectory of the woman’s salary, but it was all mostly at the same company. I in the other hand work in education so I’ve barely increased what I get paid over the years, but it’s a little different because there is a set schedule for raises and it caps out. I’m glad I love what I do.

@@johnpaulmuoneme4218Most employers and bosses are not that smart when it comes to seeing the bigger picture though. @pinktod9253

It doesn't usually work like that. The benefit of employing "job hoppers" is, that they have a greater working experience than people that stay inside of one company for their whole life. The best thing a company can do is to have a mix out of loyal employees they can trust on and job hoppers that can bring new perspectives and a greater working experience into their company.
@SurprisinglyDeep
Жыл бұрын
@@pinktod9253 While I don't disagree with your view, you need to think about how run of the mill average bosses as well as bad bosses will view the situation. Most bosses don't think as objectively as you do, they just think "it doesn't seem worth it to spend all that time and money teaching an employee who will just leave relatively soon, preferably the employee would stay indefinitely". Like this relates to behavioural economics and cognitive biases as much as it relates to incompetence on the would be boss' part. Like even a simple job like a mcdonalds burger flipper, a wal-mart stocker or a warehouse forklift driver/order picker requires the company in question spend time and money training the employee. The bosses want to try to maximise the time and effort they spend training employees. Like again I don't disagree, it's just that many bosses are not that logical. Like I heard that many Canadians who work in digital animation start off at local Canadian digital animation studios before moving to Southern California for awhile to work at the big cutting edge digital animation studios located there like Pixar or Dreamworks before later moving back to Canada and getting jobs at local Canadian digital animation studios again. Alot of Canadian digital animation studios prosper by hiring or re-hiring alot of the Canadian animators who worked in Southern California for awhile. However alot of Canadian digital animation studios also apparently go bankrupt because they refuse to hire or re-hire "quitters" and therefore lose out on all those employess valuable knowledge and skills.

My story: I found my first job in marketing 2 years ago, before I had only freelance experience and my own business for a year (which didn’t end up well). After a year I found another job and had a 50% raise. I was going to work in this company for a couple years but I got fired after 8 months of working because I didn’t get along with a new boss. So I found another job and I got +20% from the last salary, so basically during less than 2 years I had +80% from my first salary And now I’m having interviews where I negotiate +40% from what I have now So guys don’t be afraid to switch jobs, it’s not that scary as it seems
