When I installed a rear dash cam on my 991.1 cab I found there is a easily removable carpeted panel behind the flip down rear seats. It’s held in place with four metal spring clips near the top. If your coupe has this panel it may provide easier access to the engine compartment for running the camera wire.

Hi James, great videos! I watched this one, the prep video, plus the installation video and even the one where you installed in a GT3 but you never show how you installed the cable UNDER the car. Could you send one or two pictures?

To drill the hole in the bumper. If you can take it off and drill that would obviously help, but the key is to make a template out of a thin piece of wood or some thin plastic. Use the hole saw to cut the hole in the wood or plastic and then put that wood or plastic piece over the bumper to cut drill the hole. That wood or plastic piece will prevent the whole saw from sliding left and right scratching the bumper because it might jump around and scratch the paint/wrap off where you don’t want it to. Don’t ask me how I know! Get plastic wire concealer tubes when you run the wire under the car, you’ll be glad you did come winter. Good luck !

Or just use masking tape on the bumper....the drill bit won't slide .

Find the center of the hole and tap a transfer punch lightly. Then progressively harder tap. That becomes the indention your drill bit will start in - no walking.

If you can get power from the Joy Auto device this would be best as connecting to the reverse light without using a relay can cause Canbus issues on a Porsche and the camera image will flicker. I used a similar camera for my Boxster and really have to put it on full tilt, mind you don't damage the wire.

interesting i was hoping i could do this, so no need to wire into the rear lights, not a fan of cutting into wiring on any car not my porsche. so all the wiring can go to the joyeauto box?

My same screws were stripped also first time I tried to take them out. I used a drummel grinder and quickly created a square edge on two sides then used pliers or vice grips to get them out. I now have plenty of extra ones just in case 😂

James, I would have thought you'd run the wiring from the rear bumper into the engine bay and through into the cabin from the engine bay and under the carpet to the head unit?

That’s one way for sure but I want to avoid having to take the interior apart if I can.

@@AutoAmateur Maybe there's a way to run the wiring under the edge of the carpet with removing much more than the rear seats??? Just spit-balling here as I'd prefer the wiring inside as opposed to outside.

Forgive me if I mentioned this already but the camera wire routing by Bobby of YOLOfotos KZitem on his episode “Porsche 911 NavTV camera installation & factory Tour” should be similar to how yours can be routed interior to the chassis (and avoid routing under the chassis)

Hey, James. I bit the bullet and ordered a joyeauto CarPlay kit this week... also seems the most economical approach to adding a factory look backup camera. Did you happen to look at the “navtv camera 9” as well before selecting the CAI-store camera? I’m still researching about what to look for in a camera. Hoping to see your camera install before my kit arrives!

I got my JoyeAuto box and the rear view camera today. Thanks to your video I was able to complete the installation in 3 hours. Switching out the fiber optics to the new connector was clever! I would have never guessed it. Everything works except the rear view camera. I check all the connections. All the dip switches are off except #8. I used the power cable from the JoyeAuto to power the camera. Am I missing a step? Is there any additional wiring or setting required for the back up camera?

If you want to consider alternative routing of the video cables, other tips and tricks including power, drilling a mounting hole in the bumper cover, and configuring the distance lines in the PCM, check out a write-up I did on this project back in 2014... plenums.blogspot.com/2014/12/diy-2014-porsche-991-911-rear-view.html There are two parts to the installation, and I was installing a Nav-TV system with sony cam - not familiar with your kit at all. quick question if anyone can offer advice, ive followed about 3 vids of yours and been amazing. I have a 981 boxster and got the rear camera and i also installed the carplay box, do i still need to take the power from the rear lights or can that come from the joyeauto box

Hey Rob! If you have an automatic transmission, you just need to use the red 12v power wire that hangs off the JoyeAuto wiring harness inside your cabin to power your camera. If you have a manual transmission you need to tap the reverse lights.
