As an ex-cruise ship worker, it is true, they work you like dogs and pay you peanuts. If you don't mind being discriminated for your race or color, if working 15 hrs. a day 7 days a week for 10-12 months is fine for you, then go give it a shot. I got to travel around the world, that's the only good thing I can say about cruise ship jobs.

it really is modern day slavery. I've been on nine cruises and I simply don't understand how human beings can work these hours - you'll see the same waiting staff for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The cabin stewards are also constantly working, and it's probably the same for all the staff one doesn't get to see!! It is unbelievable. I know I couldn't do it!!
@Doin
5 жыл бұрын
It's because many of them come from poor countries where there are limited job opportunities. Making tax-free US$ translates well in their own currencies, often making more than they would in at home. This is why you don't see bar staff, waiters or room stewards from Western countries as they would never agree to work for a pittance.
@samskyrocket4316

Don't do it. Unless you are really poor. Because you will work 6-7 days a week,8-10 hours a day. Also you have to put up with tons of Indian management that will take advantage of you. Unless you are Indian too. Slavery is your keyword.

You all, those people were told to act kind, friendly as they are making a video and will be put on You tube, I've done housekkeping, dining room, Duty Fee Shop, shore excursions, accounting... except being a deck or engine officer. God, back then in the mid 90's the money was sweet, a lot of European people in the dining room, housekeeping... they are all gone as Europe changed politically, people who wre smart made their money in 5,10 years went home and started a business. I own my business now, teaching people how to leave corporate America. These people are hard working people, taking a full advantage of from the cruise line co. who pay less than 1% of tax in U.S. while on shore employees are just miserable, unhappy, trying to mock crew members(happened to me), one lady from RCCL, she demanded to be in her cabin at least a apck of diet coke daily, while she was already way obese, gruntling,miserable,unhappy, unattractive cow.

I don't know why people are so rude to the crew. I usually tell our cabin stewards not to bother with cleaning our cabin the morning to be a little easier on them. I've also bought calling cards and liquor as gifts (beyond the gratuity). Those people have hard jobs thousands of miles from home. Last thing they need is an entitled jackass passenger.

I like this video, it helps to know what to expect on a ship, and how to do it even training and it helps to work with others as well as that . so I don't see a lot of people that should say its slavery to work on ships, its just like working in a hotel same way but its a bit different. at sea you have your cabin to sleep and meals uniform all free and you have activities, I had a friend that worked on a ship he told me I should do it I never did because I got discriminated for disability that's against the law and most cruise ships had done the same to me when I applied and its horrible I have no backup I love to work on a ship and love to do this kind of thing I just simply cannot sit around like this it is a bad experience, unfortunately I worked with kids in parks and recreation and would be good on the ship with kids activities while parents do their own thing for grown ups and or just work in housekeeping, or even at concierge desk on passenger lobby anything would be good if I could find a ship under American flag or whoever is accepting towards me then I could do it, oh well we will see what happens it still failed but am gonna figure this out,

@Doin
5 жыл бұрын
Clearly scripted and poorly acted but it does highlight some truths about shiplife: you don't get much time to get your stuff together once you're told you have a job. I had bout 13 days to quit my job, get the medical and C1D visa. The waitress getting lost in the crew area - it takes a while to navigate the ship and know where you're going. The casino dealer over-packing, but what grown adult brings aboard a large teddy bear? Depending on your job you might not get much time off. Cabin stewards, waiters, bar staff and back of house crew work long hours and may very rarely get off the ship. As casino staff, we were able to get off in port as casinos are not allowed to open in most ports due to local gaming laws. Sea sickness is a definite reality. I was projectile vomiting on my first cruise out and needed the injection. The actress here does a poor job. She should be green, almost crying and crawling into the medical office for it to be believable. The overall experience will depend on the people you work with.
@Doin

@@RetroJames75 I only did two six-month contracts but I was very lucky with the people I worked with. We all got along really well. I think casino staff were quite laid back as our jobs were relatively easy and the money at the time was good.

No, immigration law requires it.  When a ship docks the captain must present the passport for any crew member on demand of customs/immigration.  Also, in the event of an emergency they can, lets say in an abandon ship scenario, get the passports to safety while the crew are evacuating the passengers.
@jkoneman
8 жыл бұрын
There was a video of a cruise in Europe where a fire broke out on the ship. For some of those cruises the ship keeps the passenger passports too. Anyways the fire breaks out while the ship is in port. During the video you see people evacuating the ship onto the dock then all of the sudden almost a dozen security officers are seen carrying two big locked security bags off of the ship. Those are the passports for crew and passenger.

Kandarp Mishra So find out what position you want to apply for. E.g chef, housekeeping, waiter etc. They really like it if you have previous experience in the position you would like so maybe in a hotel in your country. Then you will need to apply either to the company or through a ship employment agency (I don't know too much about them) If you are successful through the interview process that follows, you will need to get documents that allow you to travel and work onboard, so a medical, a us visa, and anyother requirements that they will notify you about. Then you will receive joining instructions and a contract and there you go! Cruise work has mixed reactions and a lot of negative publicity but from my experience it's an incredible life and a wonderful job. So good luck :)
