“It’s all about the rocker.” That’s what Skip Frye told me. I had used all my off duty time skateboarding and when I got out I decided to learn to surf. After many failed attempts, I told my story to a guy in a Mission Beach surf shop and he sold me a 8 ft Frye egg, single. First time out with it, bam, stood up. A few more outings and I was turning and getting it. I looked up Skip Frye in the phone book, found his shops address (Harry’s), and ordered my first custom, a 9’5” single fin, and a week later my world had changed. That was 35 yrs ago and I still have that board and a few like it. Turned out, Donna’s brother, Mike was my neighbor and we had many adventures and Mike took me under his wing and showed me a lot of great places to surf that were little known and used. Little Waimea was a fun spot. Thx for the memories to all that helped with this show.

Part of what Jocko so incredibly inspirational is that not only is he as masculine and tough as could be, but he also has no problem being softer and finding no issue with a grown man crying about his friends who passed away. That’s a real man.

thank you for your time -would it not be a better solution to let FEMA create optional "refugee" camps for anyone running from the dangers of COVID allowing everyone else to live their life normally as they choose fit? Masks should not be mandatory in my opinion.

I was lucky enough to have Josh build me a board a couple years ago. It's a piece of art. I only take it out a couple times a year when it's big and uncrowded due to not wanting the thing dinged up. It's a real glider. Interesting to learn about his Dad's military service. Very cool podcast.

As early as 1956 the Army officially knew it would not have enough NCO‟s for a sustained war. A staff study asserted that in the future the need for enlisted leaders would far exceed the number available and that at the commencement of, and during hostilities, the need for leaders might be so pressing as to make it necessary to appoint leaders before their ability could actually be proved on the battlefield. It was also recognized in Vietnam that it was not a senior commander‟s war, it was a junior leader‟s war. There were over 200 combat sergeants turning over each week and many men were one tour enlistees or inductees. The Army faced the problem of sending career men back or filling NCO positions with unqualified men. The demand for experienced NCO‟s in Vietnam exceeded the supply. In Vietnam the Army was trying to meet these shortages by making a two-grade substitution of personnel. This means the platoon leader in combat is forced to pick the brightest PFC he can find, declare him the sergeant, and entrust the lives of a dozen men to his care. The Army had to do something different. How it was started The Noncommissioned Officer Candidate Course came about as a result

My Grandfather refused to pick up a gun, he and 90 of his fellow students training to be priests in Presbytery in North Wales all volunteered and joined up as stretcher bearers and medical orderlies in 1914 and after training he was sent off to Gallipoli for the landings. He survived that bloodbath to the the evacuation and then onto Salonica in Churchill’s Forgotten Army. Only he and 15 of his fellow students survived and returned to continue their studies.
