Joe Bob's 100% accurate. I absolutely DESPISE the term "elevated horror". Not the films, the term.

Yeah I like a lot of the films considered elevated horror but when I hear that term I’m like, I’m pretty sure these aren’t the first horror films to have political commentary or impressive cinematograph. Or what ever vague metric is used to define elevated horror

the term "elevated horror" is just a really (really) pretentious way of telling regular, traditional and long time horror fans that "this particular picture is outstanding, and for that reason... it stands apart from your typical genre ilk... and is therefore only accessible to our keen, exclusive, valued, heightened, intellectual filmgoing sensibilities." in other words, "you're too stupid for a film like this, so we'll celebrate it for you." to which i say "fck you... " I personally love when horror pictures like Get Out, Silence of the Lambs, Eraserhead, It Follows, and The Lighthouse explore heavier topics and themes, complex character development (incredible acting notwithstanding), real-life social relevancy and implications, etc. HOWEVER, to insist that "ONLY THESE ELEVATED TYPE OF FILMS COUNT" because they're just "of a heightened artistic experience and social significance" is fcking bullsht. And that's really the point.. that's what I'm trying to say. THEY ALL COUNT!!! Whether it's Suspiria (1977) or Suspiria (2018), they all fkcing count. Just enjoy scary movies man... ...and while we're on the subject, let's stop gatekeeping horror flicks... you know, the type that says shit like "Get Out and Silence of the Lambs aren't even scary..." At the end of the day, horror is completely subjective to the viewer. Just because you're not being scared doesn't mean that everyone else isn't. If the sole purpose of a movie is to unnerve it's audience, it falls under said umbrella. categorize it as you may, it doesn't take away from the fact that it's a horror film... and not a romantic comedy.

It's horror like Jaws. Hollywood doesn't like "horror." The term thriller is horror dressed up for a night on the town. Just like the term "elevated horror." “Elevated horror is a term used by people who hate horror to describe horror films that they like.” - Joe Bob Briggs.

Here's my take on elevated horror. I think Darcy and Joe are BOTH right. There are certain genres that people just can't get into, but once in a while, a movie in that genre will come around and they'll watch it, and it'll just hit all the right buttons with them. It may not change their mind about the genre perse but they can walk away appreciating it. They appreciate the fact that the movie didn't follow the usual genre tropes and tried to be smart and sophisticated. It feels elevated but it may not actually be. Does that make sense?
