They are correct when they say the fundamental principles of AA have been highjacked. I have really struggled in the fellowship as a newcomer, feeling like if I don't do enough meetings, do exactly what my sponsor says, support is withdrawn. In my experience it has turned into a fellowship of control. I was told by my sponsor she could no longer sponsor me because I was struggling to call her everyday. After being told that I never heard from her again, despite the fact she knew she had left me in a vulnerable state. This person had completed the 12 steps and had apparently had a spiritual awakening. As far as I could see there was nothing spiritual about her treatment of me as a newcomer in the early days of recovery. None of the things sponsors expect you to do everyday appear in the big book, and in my opinion these daily rituals and the control members want to exert over the newcomer are the reasons why so many addicts are falling by the wayside / dropping out of the fellowship, and not recovering. It is such a shame. Through the grace of god I found Joe and Charlies big book study. Thank you Joe and Charlie.

Addicts? Maybe your sponsor didn’t think you had alcoholism. If your sponsor isn’t an addict they don’t suffer from your problem. There is a difference between an alcoholic and an addict. Some addicts are alcoholics (have the disease of alcoholism). But many are not. It’s not the job of any alcoholic to sponsor an addict of any kind. Whether it be food drugs sex gambling or anything else. Addiction is an outside issue. The singleness of purpose is one alcoholic talking to another. If I walked into an AA meeting and had to listen to an addict talk about shooting up for an hour or eating too much cake I would never go back bc I don’t relate to their problem. This is the exact reason the Washingtonian movement failed and Bill wrote the 12 traditions. Addicts are welcome in open meetings but only alcoholics are allowed to share. “each group has the right to be autonomous, except in matters that affect AA as a whole”. It certainly affects AA as a whole when the newcomer walks into a meeting and can’t even identify with the problem. The only ones allowed in closed meetings are those who have a desire to stop drinking. This is Alcoholics Anonymous not a support group.

Get rid of your sponsor!! The Program of AA has no mention of sponsorship. I’ve had “sponsors” in my early years but one of the men that helped me a lot told me when I asked him to sponsor me: “No I won’t sponsor you! It not discussed in the Big Book. I will however be your great good friend, love you, and talk about living in reality one day at a time.” Dump that control freak sponsor. Sounds like a Fenin-Nazi (Female Nazi!!) Find yourself a women who attracts you, where you say to yourself that she has things that you would like to be, has longer term sobriety, and talks about the Steps. Don’t ask her to be your sponsor but ask her to help you work the Steps. You need a lady friend that can help you take the Steps of recovery. There are a few sane and sober members of AA that can help you. I have 41+ years of continuous sobriety and know what you’re suffering from. Listen to these videos and take notes. Don’t drink no matter what and study the heck out of the book. These two guys will help you hundreds of times more than your current dreadful bitch trying to assuage her big ego. God loves you and will keep you sober!! Blessings

One of the concepts of early recovery which is very important is learning to be responsible. Simple directions/ tasks such as daily contact with a sponsor are important in helping establish a relationship between two alcoholics, where both parties are helping each stay sober. One of our main maladies is the inability to establish and maintain a simple relationship of harmony between two human beings.🙏♥️🤗

My sponsor took me to see these guys in 1994 in Rhode Island. I didn’t know what to expect I got sober at 19 I was 20 I guess when I saw these guys. It is now 28 years later and I am still sober. I can honestly say I learned so much about the big book from these guys. I think I was only nine months sober but I still remember everything they said about the big book. I could’ve read it 1000 times and never understood it like I did after I left Rhode Island that weekend. My sponsor who I thought was picking on me and said a lot of things I didn't like, after I got through the steps, I thanked that man for having the balls to tell me the truth. On 6/26/2022 I will celebrate 41 years of continuous sobriety in the program of AA as laid out in the book Alcoholics Anonymous. The thing that holds us together is our common solution. The material taught in the treatment centers is not AA. They receive payments from the government and therefore they cannot talk about God and vital spiritual experiences. They do not believe in that. They are materialistic atheists and their god is their wills and their minds; they are will-worshipers. That works for some, but I would have died following their aberrations. Thanks Bob and Charlie! Do not follow the 12&12 except for the traditions. Listen to these talks several times! God bless.

The 12 Steps as taught in the 12&12 are more psychologically based, the 12 Steps in the BB work for getting sober for many but they will not be able to do many things. Look up Susan Cheever’s article on “Why there are two versions of the 12 Steps” found at AA Agnostic website (website for atheists and agnostics in AA).
