He moved to France at 10 years old with his Parents. His dad was a member of the Communist party of America so he had to moved to France to continue his film career.

Mr Dassin vous pouvez parler dans n'importe quelle langue tu as quelque chose dans la voix qui ne peut rester impossible à reproduire déjà les Français les imitateurs ne savent pas reproduire ta voix pourtant tu as une voix de baryton bass je comprends pas qu'ils puissent faire que de très mauvaises imitations à tel point que si la musique est bien là quand à la voix zéro

Comme j appréciais Joe pour son intelligence , sa finesse d esprit, son éducation, sa classe et l Artiste qu’il était ne pouvait donc qu être à cette image ! Il ne lui restait après cet entretien qu un peu plus d une année à vivre ! Terrible aussi pour ses deux Fils , des bébés, à qui il aurait donné une éducation qui lui ressemblait !

Wow! I had no idea that he was American until just now and just googled him. I was born and raised in France until I migrated to America when I was 14. My family used to listen to him all the time.

Joe was child of show business. His father was Hollywood movie maker. I think his success was predestined also by genes of his family.

Joe could have broken into U.S. show business had he tried a lot earlier in his career. I think that at the ripe age of 42 he was at ease with himself as far fame and expansion were concerned. RIP. Joe .

He was really amazing in anything he did! And he did so many fantastic things in his short life! I think that his sons are speaking English. I only heard his older son, Jonathan, once speaking in English.

His English was surprisingly good considering he spent the majority of his life in France.

But he was an American and this never changed. He has written five novels during the time he was a student at University of Michigan and all were written in English. For one of them he received a Hopwood award, in 1958.
