Joe Frazier is my all-time favorite boxer; he was my dad's boxing idol. Frazier came from the humblest of beginnings having been born and raised on a South Carolina plantation before moving to Philadelphia to pursue his dream of becoming the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Frazier won Olympic Gold in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics with a broken thumb before turning professional. As a professional, Frazier cleaned out the division and even dealt Muhammad Ali his first professional loss. Despite defeat at the hands of George Foreman, Frazier rebounded and gallantly engaged Ali twice more. The Ali-Frazier rivalry ultimately culminated in the epic 1975 war known as the "Thrilla in Manila."
Frazier fought with one good eye and with a left arm that was technically never straight. Frazier had the biggest heart of any heavyweight champion in history. Hopefully his old gym in Philadelphia is refurbished and brought to life once more. Frazier represents a bygone era loaded with true blue collar fighting men who represented grit and determination that extended far beyond the ring.
RIP Champ; thank you for inspiring my father.
