Album: Page One Year: 1963 Label: Blue Note Kenny Dorham - trumpet Joe Henderson - tenor saxophone McCoy Tyner - piano Butch Warren - bass Pete La Roca - drums
Joe is and always has been brilliant, and played with the Great Horace Silver a lot, and this sound is right from the Horace Silver Quintet influence playbook to me. Sounds just like it. Beautiful.

One of my fondest memories from my days of performing was when my band, which was primarily a pop/rock cover band, would slip some jazz standards into the set list. This was one of my favorites of those.

My favorite version of this tune. The epitome of the blue note sound- impeccable,expressive and hard driving.

Too bad McCoy is listed as ‘Etc.’ on the album cover. Plenty of space for his name there. Sheesh

@icecreamforcrowhurst McCoy Tyner was a genius, and he gives so much rythm to this tune. Essential! A shame, indeed!

I just want to thank KZitem for uploading all the Jazz Greats in particularly the ones that need to heard. SOLID!!!!
Note: If "you" are going to play this justly famous tune, only 16 bars long, get it right. DO NOT use the "Real Book" notated head, which is incorrect. If "you" have an ear, it will take maybe 5 minutes to transcribe the accurate head, and thereto to play the tune as intended. For extra credit, get the Joe Henderson harmony line in there, which is in the last 4 bars on the repeat. Also there is the "other" head after the bass solo. More like a background line I guess. A lot of similar tunes have these secondary heads. All am saying is, if you are going to do this tune, put some work into it & get it going in the right direction. Don't rely on the crappy "Real Book".

Charles Duckett Jr. I’m probably being dumb, but how is this different to the Real Book’s notated head?
@tubadude07

I've used the Real Book as a bass player, it's extremely helpful seeing the lines, even if they arent "correct" That's the thing about Jazz, it doesn't need to be "right". As long as it sounds good is all that should matter. Yes sure you can learn by ear which is how most musicians back then did. The real book is helpful for musicians who don't have a good ear but still want to learn jazz, i don't think thats wrong to use the Real book. but one shouldn't use it as a crutch. Then again what do i know Mr. Duckett, you could be the greatest musician on earth and i'm just a guy.
