Fun fact: This is not the soundtrack heard in the original Japanese release. The Japanese version is much shorter (39 minutes) and is heavier on the 80s synthesizers. When Disney produced the English dub, they actually had Hisaishi compose a new score to appeal to a Western audience, including 90 minutes of fully symphonic music. Hisaishi has said that the rescore is a bit simplistic for his liking, but that he learned a lot. And while it runs counter to his preference for immersive, quiet scenes, Miyazaki himself reportedly liked the new score.

Honestly as much as my favorites movies from Myazaki might be My Neighbor Totoro or Spirited Away (or even Nausicäa of the valley of the wind), Castle in the sky has Hisaishi's best score. A lot of the compositions stay in your mind in this movie, and it's not only piano (the robot theme and Pazu's fanfare are awesome. Main theme is beautiful too ofc).

@@cryt9108 he didn't - as I've learned, this is the US version of the sountracl. The Japanese version retained a very short (30/40 minutes long) soutrack, leaving lots of scene in a very silent, meditation ambiance Miyazaki often gives. But for the US version, Joe Hisaishi was told to compose an orchestral version, to add much more because people felt the US public wouldn't react as well as the Japenese one with silent moments. The Japenese version is much more synth-heavy too !

This film has a great message that I didn't understand as a child. I thought Mushka was entitled to the legacy of his ancestors. Watching it as an adult I can see his true motivation is greed, and the belief he's superior to the groundlings and therefore has the right to terrorize them. He's a capitalist who puppeteers a state/army that isn't his own, to get what he wants, then stabs them in the back afterwards. Sheeta is also a Laputian, but she's integrated with the groundlings and is just trying to live in peace, and form a connection with the land/Earth. It wouldn't matter whether Laputia was Mushka's birth rite because of his special ancestry or not, he wanted its power because he saw himself as different and better than others. Just because your ancestors had something doesn't give you the right to use it to hurt others in the present. That Laputa also doubles as a metaphor for how nuclear bombs can be used to hold the world hostage is also brilliant and spot on. Johnathan Swift would have been proud of this adaptation of his work.

The original Japanese one is on a much smaller budget, has like 30 minutes of music, with small orchestras and a lot of synth music for budget reasons.
