When my wife was in college, one of the people she got to know very well and became friends with, was grossly obese, and had all the excuses of why she was fat. But, my wife said, all you had to do to know why she was fat, was to go to lunch with her. My wife had never seen a seatbelt extension on an airplane until they flew together to a school sponsored training course. They had to put it on her friend to even buckle her in, and my poor wife said she afraid to go to sleep on the plane or she might end up like one of those babies who mother rolled over on them in bed and smothered them to death.

My sister is obese and is always eating salads and fish at family dinners and complaining about how hard it is to lose weight. Then one day her daughter made some comment about how she eats microwave nachos all the time in the evening and she was so embarrassed and actually tried to deny it but her daughter was just like come on.. don't lie. It's weird how pathological fat people seem to be about lying about their food intake. It's a lot like alcoholism I'm beginning to realize, lying about your alcohol intake is one of the hallmarks of alcohol addiction, and in my experience most fat people do that same thing with food.

Ten years ago I weighed 545lbs. Both my parents were thin as was everyone in my extended family so genetics wasn't the cause. The cause was gluttony and inactivity. I would go to All-You-Can-Eat Buffets and took that as a challenge, often finishing half a dozen plates of food before getting full. Then go home and play video games or some otherwise sedentary activity. I never exercised or even walked much. I blamed myself for such a lifestyle and never tried to defer that blame to anything other than my own poor choices. And in that regard I can at least say I remained honest with myself. I decided to do something about it after a humiliating visit to Six Flags with some friends where I was repeatedly rejected from riding the rides being unable to be properly secured in the seats, unable to latch the safety bars or harnesses due to my extreme size. And that was on the rides I could even squeeze into the seats at all. So I watched my friends have fun and enjoy all the rides while I had to wait at the exit. I felt like an outcast and a freak. It hurt emotionally and I knew if I didn't do something my life was effectively over. I began a radical diet that same month and started light exercise, low-impact to prevent injury to my knees bearing so much weight. Walks through the mall. Stationary bike. Rowing machine. Swimming laps at the public pool. At first it was difficult and I didn't see any results immediately. Even after losing 40lbs I didn't seem to be showing results although my clothes did seem to be slightly looser. It took about three months before I began noticing visible signs of weight loss, and friends and family began to see it too and encouraged me to continue. I was fortunate to have that kind of support and encouragement. So now, ten years later, I weigh 230lbs and barely resemble the person who couldn't fit into the rides at Six Flags. In fact I have since been back to Six Flags and this time rode every ride I couldn't before plus a few new ones built since. I'd post before and after pics if I could here but no such option. It wasn't genetics that got me into such a state and it wasn't genetics that got me out. It was sheer will. That's all it could have been. And I have to say the embarrassment and humiliation of that first trip to Six Flags that did something to change my priorities and force me to change.

Fell off the horse in the middle of the year but came back on and corrected the fat gains just after new years eve. All the while I've gained a substantial amount of muscle, the type that springs out at me when I quickly glance at the mirror. All new pants and my t-shirts look tenty. The genetics argument makes little sense. Your body cannot become obese without outside sources. Couple this with the fact that nearly every living being on this planet has the ability to store fat. It is merely a luxury and curse of excess food with little to no need for physical exercise in modern lifestyles. Families who do not "train" their children to have decent eating habits or the joy of movement will obviously lean towards fatter and unhealthy habits.

I think that Gabor Maté's work sheds light to this issue. It's an addiction: behavior that is pleasant in the short run but it is detrimental in the long term, and it cannot be not done, even if "you want to". And he explains how all addictions are actually rooted in trauma
@girth_goblin
Жыл бұрын
I agree with you 100%, but that is exactly what makes addiction and obesity diseases. It’s the inability to stop without help. It might be a coping mechanism to deal with trauma or genetics, probably both. An addict can absolutely recover, but calling addiction/obesity a disease gives the problem a high level of severity. People with the disease need to feel that level of severity to reach out for help and make an impactful change.

Your story highlights the other profit fueled myth created by big pharma and the doctors they sponsor... that the "life saving" insulin is the only way to control type II diabetes. It really reveals just how symbiotic big businesses actually are. The mass marketing (media) of chemically addictive junk food (produced by farmers and food manufacturers / subsidized by the government) leads to a medical diagnosis of diabetes (doctors and Healthcare providers) and a prescription of insulin (drug makers). This is clearly a cradle to grave business model with an elaborate design to benefit intersecting business interests.

As a man in my late 30s with two obese parents... Im lucky enough my body has almost always been a perfect report card on how healthy i am living. Ive consistently lifted since highschool football and wrestling and 5 years in the army. During the Pandemic when gyms were closed i ate and drank too much and balooned up to 220lbs. i went back to work, was contracting in a dry country and lost 20lbs, took some time off in a non muslim country and put the weight back on. its always been lifestyle. Last time I switched to 1 meal a day, cooking my own food, and wrangling 2 German Shepard's to keep me active. which was enough to drop 15lbs and keep it off. A couple years ago I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid. Doctor straight away put me on meds and said I will have to take it for the rest of my life. In a way it’s understandable because my body wasn’t functioning anymore. But when I asked my doctor why this happened to me he said genetics. He did not give me another explanation why would a person get this disease. Gave me 2 pages to read on it and told me to google it so I can learn about it more. But he clearly stated-genetics. I have no one in my family who had it. My metabolism became very very slow. A couple friends of mine got it too and were told -genetics. They don’t have anyone who had it in their family. So after many years of research and trial I have decided I got it because of lack of Iodine. I didn’t eat seafood. My friends do not eat seafood. I started taking iodine tablets and I noticed huge difference in my health. I became stronger, less tired and my metabolism improved so so much. Now I can eat and lose weight. I feel that in order to lose weight consistently and healthly, you need to change at least a small part of your lifestyle. One needs to adopt at least a healthy habit or two (like exercising 3 times a week, or cutting Soda from the diet etc) and fully commit to it. Or else, even if one commits to a crazy diet for 2 months, that person will regain most of that weight once they go back to their old lifestyle. Discipline and consistency is key.

mental health plays a huge factor in this. i was almost 400 pounds, got down to about 230. i thought there was no way i would gain the weight back now that i knew how to exercise and hoiw to stick to a ketogenic diet. i didn't take into consideration that i have severe anxiety paired with severe ocd and that would end up being my downfall. i would cheat here and there and would always get back on track after. i eventually ended up getting a little too confident in my ability to bounce back and started cheating a bit more often. my exercise slowed down a good bit although i stayed pretty active at work. then one day i started dwelling on everything i don't like about myself that i have no power over. i started combing through my entire past looking for things to worry and obsess over, as one does when they have a certain type of ocd. one thing led to another, i ended up in a psych ward for a short bit. i changed my meds around but still haven't been the same since. i said i was originally almost 400 pounds, well now i AM 400 pounds. you tend not to care about your diet anymore when you feel you truly have nothing to live for. when you feel like you don't deserve to be healthy and to look good. bring on the cookies and cakes. anything to help, even just for a second. i'm also a bit of a musician. i used to love making music regardless of how bad my songs sucked. i still haven't worked on a song since this whole thing. anyway my point is this. weightloss can most certainly be more tricky for people with mental health issues. exercise does truly help with mental health but soon as you let up just a little too much, it can open the floodgates.

Before that, she had worked out 5 days a week and ate right - high protein, calorie deficit, etc.... and she couldn't lose anything and her body composition wasn't changing at all. It's just the 2 of us and we work from home so I know she was legit. What I don't get with insulin resistance is how does it happen? What's the actual cause? It seems like pharma and doctors stumbled on this and semaglutide deal and just rolled it out but it seems like at best it's treating a symptom. What's the underlying root cause for insulin resistance? And how do you adjust on that?

I have been prescribed semaglutide but my portion control isn’t a problem and like Joe Rogan said I don’t want to eat less than what I am because I need the nutrients and fuel to train at gym. So I do not want to go down that path. My endocrinologist said insulin resistance could be genetics because I have been on low carb, low sugar really for the last 8-10 years and that is bc I have always had to watch what I eat or I would just keep gaining weight. Aside from my issues, I have a question, we all know at least one person who can drink cola all day and eat so bad!! and not gain a pound.. is that genetics?

For me it was cutting out alcohol all but one night a week. Tonight I will have up to six beers, the best part is now that my tolerance for it is so low that I can get a pretty significant buzz from light beers. And I'll most likely have four beers. That's 400 extra calories a week on average. I don't eat sugars or many carbs otherwise since I'm pre-diabetic and it runs in my family. Yes, genetics play a factor in weight, a significant one. I'll always have a little bit of fat on my abdominal area. Even in my best shape of my life when I was in Ranger School I still didn't have visible abs. Putting weight on is super easy for me thanks to those genetics too. I gained 60 lbs in three years of law school. Late nights studying and the stress, it was easier to eat shitty foods while the culture of alcohol in the legal field wasn't quite as bad as the military it was always there too, studying at a local pub was normal, drinks out celebrating the end of term exams and cocktail mixers were the norm. Most student gained about 20 lbs over those years, I trippled that lol. Thankfully I've dropped that weight and was close to getting back in fighting shape when I broke all my limbs in a motorcycle crash. Not only was I sedentary for over a year with multiple surgeries, but when you are bedridden with no use of your hands or legs you get so bored that food is one of the few things you can take pleasure in and look forward to. I probably put 20 lbs back on, but I'm working on it again.

@Vlad Tepes I'm one of those people, when I was competing in BJJ my instructor and trainer couldn't believe that I was still gaining muscle mass from relatively high rep, low weight, and body weight calisthenics. When it came to making weight at a specific class I really had to just do smoker roll sessions and pure cardio like running for conditioning. Most other guys at the club struggled to keep lean mass on. I'll never be an underwear model, but that's ok, most people don't have those genetics, but that won't stop me from being as fit as I can just for the benefits that brings of living a more full life. When I was overweight and out of shape doing fun stuff was so hard it wasn't fun. When I crashed my bike almost 2 years ago my ER doctor said "wow, you're in really great shape for a 38 year old, guys your age get in crashes like this and never walk again, what do you do?" So lots of benefits beyond quality of life, it can help you in an accident or emergency too.

But the thing is ive worked one off days with my dad before when this guy was there and he literally doesnt eat. He is just drinking energy drinks and coke all day. He is very active at work, moving and hauling concrete bags and cement and the usual stuff. Even though the drinks are bad for you theres no way hes getting his daily calories from JUST the drinks so i cant imagine what he wolfed down once he got of work to maintain that weight while working an active job

Some people do have to work harder due to a lower metabolism (basal metabolic rate). That might account for like 100-200 calories difference in TDEE at the absolute most. The possible genetic factor is tiny in comparison to the regular energy demands of every human body, and the amount of calories ingested via food. Maybe X person needs 2000 calories to maintain and Y person who has an extreme metabolic disorder needs 1800 to maintain. Just eat 200 less calories than person X and you'll stay the same weight. People act like genetics means they can eat nothing and gain hundreds of thousands of calories worth of body fat from thin air. It's complete nonsense, just an excuse to avoid responsibility for poor decisions and overconsumption. They also neglect to consider the fact that people with a huge amount of excess body fat require many more calories than someone of a healthy size just to maintain their current level of obesity, even with a shitty metabolism. If you're 100 pounds overweight and eat the same amount of calories as someone 100 pounds lighter who is maintaining you will lose a ton of weight due to the demands placed on the body to carry around all of that extra weight. The people who say "I can't lose weight because I have a shitty metabolism" actually require many more calories to maintain their current size than healthy weight people 99.999999% of the time. Their basal metabolic rate is significantly higher just due to the fact they are obese so it's double bullshit.

I used to run a lot, so I was super ripped, then I used to lift weights with a powerlifting program and my typical day was around 5k calories. Then I stopped training, because of injury, but my appetite stayed the same, so I went from 95kg of muscle and fat to 100kg of just fat. Then I went down to 73kg with walking and healthy eating habits. And don't get me wrong, I did not miss my pint of ice cream and piece of cake. No way. I was just smart about it. I kept the same body fat % and went up to 80kg lifting weights. My dad looks like a barrel, and my mom is nowhere thin. I looked the best at the age of 28. I went from 265 to 190 doing weight watchers. The key is just consistency and eating not to feel full, but rather eating to a measured amount. By the time I feel "full" I usually have eaten way more than I should. I have since gained it all back and am up to 280+. It's so hard to be at this point, and it feels impossible to break the cycles that got me back here. I have all the head knowledge of how to get back down, but it requires so much dedication and focus, and I'm just not ready to start that again. One day I will, but right now isn't that day. Genetics does play a major role in weight management. It does put some people at a disadvantage. We all have that friend who is naturally skinny as a rail and eats like garbage. But genetics is not an end-all excuse. It is merely another factor/hurdle that needs to be understood and managed in the same way that activity, psychology, habits, and environment, etc needs to be managed.

However when I moved out and bought my own food, I continued the habit of stuffing myself and gained more weight getting to be 25-35 lbs overweight, but I was also riding my bike everywhere, an average of 40 miles a week. My friend who was getting a beer belly asked me for advice and I didn’t have the confidence to give him any solutions. He looked disappointed. I came to the conclusion that people want people with abs to tell them how not to be fat. Since then I’ve given good advice to people when they ask instead of listening to that voice in my head that says “you’re unqualified bro.” I’ve gotten a lot better responses to people. For example. Did you know that it’s ok feel hungry? Your brain tells you the second you feel hungry to go eat. Back in the day we used to have that feeling then spend a whole day hunting a deer. We have so much food available to us today that we can just grab something off the shelf.

I come from an overweight family with health issues. when I was a kid I was chubby and short. But I was also an active kid even though I had fat on top of my body. Habits start young and can be hard to break. Even ignoring genetics, I know a kid who is nearing 300 lbs at the age of 15 and he is extremely active, plays football, basketball, always over at my parents house (his grand parents) outside riding bikes, playing hide and seek, etc. His mother used to send him to my mothers house during summer, EVERY SINGLE MORNING, with 2 krispy kreme glazed doughnuts and a coke for breakfast when he was 8 years old! That's nearly 700 BAD calories just for breakfast alone. Why is this kid obese? Quite literally because of his parents. Now, when he is old enough to make his own decisions, he will likely struggle to make the correct one when it comes to eating, because he has spent most of his life having the incorrect one made for him. Although it will be his choice in the end, he is still going to struggle hard if he ever even decides to make the decision to be healthy to begin with.

Looking at a few of my family members, I could absolutely be much heavier than I am. I think you agree with this, but I want to reiterate that there are people who do have genetic issues that are nearly impossible to overcome. Out of desperation I tried carnivore and still didn’t lose weight after 3 months. I’m still hoping it will work eventually since I’ve seen positive changes…. I don't think anybody is refuting this. But if you watched the 60 minutes clip, the issue is that this Doctor said "The NUMBER ONE CAUSE of obesity, is GENETICS... 50-80% likelihood of being obese EVEN with optimal eating, stress management, sleep... ". Cause is the wrong choice of word as that implies that it's fixed and embedded into you regardless of good habits. If she had said "strongest predictor", what she's saying would make sense as having overweight parents IS a strong determining factor to your childhood weight. Genes are not the cause of obesity (unless you have an extremely special condition such as prader-willi syndrome, but conditions like these are exceptions to the rule).
