June 25th, 1948. On this day, the rematch between the legendary Joe Louis aka “The Brown Bomber” and the great Jersey Joe Walcott took place after their 1st meeting last year where Louis controversially retained his World Heavyweight Championship via SD.
This is Louis’ 25th defense as World Heavyweight Champion.
Prefight records; Louis 57(48)-1, Walcott 44(27)-12-2.
In their 1st fight about 6 months before, Walcott appeared to have outworked Louis for the most of the fight and even scored 2 knockdowns. But to the shock of the boxing world, Louis earned a SD to successfully retain his position as World Heavyweight Champion for the 24th time.
Going into the fight, Walcott had notable victories over Joe Baksi, Lee Oma, Jimmy Bivins, Elmer Ray, Al Ettore, Curtis Sheppard (2x), Joey Maxim (2x) & Lee Q. Murray (2x). On the other hand, The Brown Bomber in his legendary reign as World Heavyweight Champion had beaten a great number of who’s who such as Al Ettore, Lou Nova, Red Burman, Johnny Paychek, Tami Mauriello, Al McCoy, Gus Dorazio, Bob Pastor, Charley Retzlaff, John Henry Lewis, Tony Galento, Jim Braddock, Paulino Uzcudun, Jack Sharkey, Primo Carnera, Max Schmeling, Tommy Farr, Jack Sharkey, Max Baer, Jersey Joe Walcott, King Levinsky (2x), Bob Pastor (2x), Lee Ramage (2x), Billy Conn (2x), Abe Simon (2x), Buddy Baer (2x) & Arturo Godoy (2x).
Just as in their first bout, Walcott had the upper hand outworking a slightly faded Joe Louis and floored him in the 3rd round. As a whole, Louis did better than in their previous meeting but Walcott was still more effective as a whole up to the 10th round.
However, in the 11th frame Louis shook Jersey Joe with a big right hand and sensing the opportunity he went for the kill with a volley of punches that sent him face-first to the canvas. Walcott gamely got up just after the 10th count and was clearly in no position to continue.
With this victory, The Brown Bomber set the all time record for the most successful world title defenses at 25; a record that remains unbroken till this day.
After this victory, Louis retired with a record of 58(49)-1 but made an ill advised comeback in 1960.
