Schmeling knocked out Louis in the 12th round in a non-title fight in 1936, and Adolf Hitler and his regime used the win as evidence of German superiority. In the rematch, Louis won by first-round knockout. Schmeling, who threw only two punches, wound up in a New York hospital for 10 days following the bout and suffered several broken vertebrae.

Schmeling was associated with the Nazi party, though one has to wonder how much of that was his own decision. They would eventually become good friends and Schmeling was even a pallbearer at Louis's funeral.

When Schmeling went don't for the first time he shouldn't gotten up at the count of 2. He should have stayed down til the count of 9. You must take advantage of every second given to you. When Dempsey knocked Tunney down, Tunney stayed down as long as he could.

Schmeling was moving on instinct at that point. The barrage when he was on the ropes had fractured multiple vertebrae and hemorrhaged muscle. @@impuresinz1414 That's a blatantly inaccurate statement. Primo Carnera, Abe Simon, Buddy Baer were all over 6'2" and well over 220 lb. In fact, the only fight against a light heavy that measured up to his best fights with natural heavies was Billy Conn. And it's just inaccurate to say fighters lacked technique.

@@Tom-dd5lm Some say he lost his first fight with Arturo Godoy. Watch it and judge for yourself. I think he would've lost on points, but when you're fighting the champ, it's sometimes not enough to win on points; you've got to take it away from the champ. Godoy was a frustrating fighter to fight; very good defensively. In their second meeting, Louis studied Godoy's style (which was staying low) and straightened up Godoy with uppercuts so he could knock Godoy out.

the most amazing thing in this clip is how poor, actually non-existent, is Schmeling's defense is w/ his left hand. no one seems to comment on hit. his left hand is either extended or down at his side the whole time, even after getting repeatedly hit from Louis' right hand. you will get knocked out by anyone in such a stance. the fact that he survived more than two of those atomic bombs from Louis's right hand is amazing.

I do think there was a rule about hitting someone in the back. That was certainly not followed in this fight. The war fever and propaganda was in full swing and Max was the villain and Joe the Hero so they were going to do everything in their power to make sure the hero won. It was no longer a boxing match but a political battle with national face at stake. With Joe and Max merely pawns. That was much like the BS that Hitler was mad that Jessie Owens won and snubbed him by leaving the stadium to not see him get his medal. Jessie Owens himself said that was not true and that Hitler shook his hand later and gave him a gift. Don't believe everything the media spins.

I don't know if Joe necessarily took Max lightly the first time but he had the classic young fighter flaw of dropping his left after jabbing. Schmeling saw it while watching films of Louis ... no one thought the aging Schmeling could win that fight but he coyly noted to the media, "I see something" ... Louis corrected the flaw after that fight and it's generally believed to be what Louis was referring to in his famous pre-1938 fight statement, "Schmeling is two years older but I'm two years smarter in a boxing sense."

The shot that killed him were the punches he took to his back. And he took more than one when he was with his face to the ropes. it damaged his spin and he could no longer even walk without his legs trembling. Have you ever tried to even stand up with your lower back out. That is why he went to the hospital. It was for his spine. Max had a head like a rock and took a worse beating from Baer and still didn't go down. Joe probably would have won this fight but not like this in the first round. it was his damaged spin that knocked out Max. Watch the fight. That is why fighters are not supposed to hit people in the back. Although in this case Max turned his back to him.

Rocky Marciano fought against a 42 year old in his last fight and retired at the age of 32 beïng the champion of the world for about 3 years. Joe Louis was the champion of the world for nearly 1,5 DECADE! From the start, Shmelling was caught totally off-guard by Joe Louis’s transformed style. From the unrelenting punishment delivered to a nearly helpless opponent, I could sense Louis’s hatred and at the end, some disappointment Shmelling was still alive. That he was able to forgive Louis for hitting him while he was on the way down, Shmelling showed his extraordinary class. As often happens between mortal enemies, an all-out battle often results in the opponents becoming close personal friends. Ali and Foreman, Sugar Ray and Duran. It indicates to me that a contest of this scale is a transformative experience, with your opponent as a partner, an intimate partner, as the two of you battle to the very edge of survival. Joe Frazier was the exception. He never reconciled with Ali, whose wealth and popularity Frazier felt he too deserved. Joe died broke and alone.

Ali was renowned for “calling the round” early in his career, predicting when he would KO his next opponent. Before the 2nd Schmeling fight, Joe Louis was talking with writer Jimmy Cannon. Louis asked Cannon his opinion of the upcoming fight.
