In some ways this updated adaptation was even better than the original Scottish Play. Having Lili (Lady) MacBeth actually witnessing the tragic and bloody results of her intrigues with Joe, seeing the slain family of Lennie/MacDuff, made her descent into guilt-laden madness more believable. And having Joe accidentally kill Lily before he himself was dispatched by the vengeful Lennie, was a brilliant theatrical coup de grace. Cheers to all in this exciting and well produced movie.

Does anyone else think the ending after Lennie speaks with Angus about closing up mansion and being out of a job is he walks out the door and is either shot by police or his own gang? It surprised me hearing gun shots. With his whole family dead seems like he would not have much to live for either way. Already had his revenge on Mac and his henchmen.
@barrymalkin4404

I wouldn't be surprised if this was Lennie's "suicide by cop" in which he pretended to fire his tommy gun on the cops to provoke them to kill him. This Lennie/MacDuff performance by Bonar Colleano, who I'd never heard of before, was believable and superb. 👍

Paul Douglas died of a heart attack not too long after making this film. His volatile and explosive characterwas certainty noteworthy. Shakespeare knew human nature under certain conditions. Ambition and betrayal seem to surface together for those who also has a "trusted" person with a degree of both as well. This film may have given some a desire to revisit this Shakespeare's play, and other plays, that show the evil side of the human condition. We do live in a fallen world.

Well said and well put. The late great Mr Douglas was one of my all time fave stars. He had been cast as the philandering executive in Billy Wilders comedy/drama "The Apartment" but (as you pointed out) his life was cut short by a sudden massive heart attack in Sept of 1959. Poor fellow was only 52. Fred MacMurray took over the role at the last minute for the 1960 multi-Oscar wining movie, which was released in 1960. Wilder & Fred had worked together successfully in the 1944 noir classic "Double Indemnity".

Great casting in a different kind of noir. Paul Douglas and Ruth Roman play the heavies in an American tragedy. Even though it's Shakespeare, Macbeth needn't be weighted down with hammy performances, broad affected accents, or literal scripted dialogue.

Bad enough they butchered one of my favorite works (MacBeth), but thinking an aging Paul Douglas could carry a movie was silly, especially as a 'kingpin'. His weight by then had made his Heart troubles worse and he died less than 3 years after this role. He was great in A Letter to Three Wives, but casting him as a man women fell for??? Linda Darnell & Janet Lee, for example- nice try, Hollywood, but he was liked for his crude ways, not his charming presence. Bonar Colleano did a great job, and was believable.
