That reminds me.... A man from my home town in Scotland was captured by the Japanese in Singapore during WW2. He was transported to a forced labour camp in Thailand to build a railway through the jungle. Then he was transported to Japan but the boat was torpedoed and sank in the Pacific. For five days he was stuck in the water in a massive slick of fuel oil while the other prisoners who survived the sinking were eaten by sharks. After fighting off the sharks and cooking in the sun, he was picked up again by the Japanese and taken to Hiroshima in time to survive the nuclear attack. When he got home, after the war, he never told his wife anything about what had happened because he didn't want to upset her. And he never spoke about it at all until she died. His name was Alistair Urquhart. Read his book, The Forgotten Highlander. Incredible. He died in 2016 aged 97. Rest In Peace Alistair. You earned it.

To be fair, Quint really does steal Jaws. Love Roy, but Quint kills it with his Ahab like vendetta for the shark. It's a shame people don't appreciate Jaws as much anymore for how ground breaking it was. At the time the shark was top notch animatronics, but because it had many malfunctions in filming the crew had to improvise a lot. The entire scene where Quint tells the story of the USS Indianapolis (the ship that sank and the sailors got picked off by sharks) was only shot bc the shark was not working that day, and it ends up being one of the best scenes in the whole movie.

My Great Grandfather Richard Alfred Miles was aboard the USS Indianapolis the day it was struck. He was incapable of telling the entire story without shedding tears up until the day we lost him at age 92. He talked about how they lost many men from dehydration due to the heat and consumption of salt water. The sharks also did their part by assuring the water surrounding what few life rafts had not been destroyed by the torpedoes would remain crimson red with the most horrific aroma of death constantly lingering in the scorching Pacific sun for the four day ordeal. Never have I known a man as brave or tough as him, but some memories haunt us forever. RIP Chief Petty Officer Miles

I met one of the 317 men that survived this. He told me wen the torpedo hit the Indianapolis he jumped as the boat was sinking, he was sucked under from the vacuum the boat created from going under, he was saved by an air pocket from one of the cabins in the ship escaping and rising to the surface. He happened to be directly above the air pocket and was pushed back to the surface after he had been sucked under far enough for his eardrums to rupture. He was then in the mass of men floating in the gulf of the Philippines for over a week. In a oil slick. He told me they would rotate on the debris floating and the life rafts they managed to get released before the ship sank. He told he personally witnessed over 50 men around him within a few dozen feet be ate alive. Incredible story to be honest

Brandon Kutzler yep, the CA-35. I attend the annual get together and those are some tough badasses man. The accounts of it were absolutely horrendous. “317 survived” I believe is the name of the book.

I did a report on the USS Indianapolis in middle school. Crazy story. Some of them thought that if they dive like 10-15 feet they could drink the water down there. Surprise, the couldn't.

Robert Shaw was in the 1977 Movie "The Deep" with Nick Nolte, Jacqueline Bisset and Louis Gossett, Jr. He was definitely a badass. Sadly he died only a year later in 1978.
