Joe does have a point despite not being a scientist. We will be able to get people to Mars, and we might be able to get them back. But we aren’t going to be able to get people there and keep them there for a significant amount of time AND bring them back again. The amount of time for selection and training, then the long ass trip to Mars, and then the fact that to get a lot of shit done there and make that long trip worthwhile, you’re going to need to be there for probably a couple years minimum. This isn’t an ISS trip where you go and hang out and then drop back to earth. Two years is probably the minimum time, maybe more. Then another long ass trip back. Your talking about at least of decade of time for selection and training, then the trip, and the mission, and then the return trip home. For that whole decade you’re likely forgoing things like family and friends. And you’re not sending 20 year old single people. You’re probably sending 35-45 year old people with relevant experience. I just think that it’s a bigger lift than we are capable of for a while. Now a trip there and back? Like a moon mission, but longer? We could be closer to that. But colonization? Nah. Not yet.
