"Jedem das seine" means "To each his own" you can translate it like she did. The Latin phrase "Suum cuique" goes back as a principle to ancient Greece. In politeia, Plato stated that justice exists "if one does one's own and does not do many things" (τὸ τὰ αὑτοῦ πράττειν καὶ μὴ πολυπραγμονεῖν δικαιοσύνη ἐστί, to ta hautou prattein kai me polypragmonein dikaiosyne esti, IV 433a). Everyone should do his or her own, in the manner and to the extent that it corresponds to his nature, his possibilities and the individual circumstances (idiopragy formula). In addition, Plato explained that everyone also receives his own and that no one should be deprived of his own (433e).

The title is false, honestly. They came close to conquering most of Europe, but they stood no chance of invading the Americas or Asia (You better believe they would've attacked Japan if they had won the war lol). Also, the Nazis attacked on too many fronts at once out of desperation for oil to keep their war machine going. In other words, what they were doing and the speed at which they were doing it was never sustainable. They were always going to lose.

In regard to Everyone Gets What They Deserve on the gate of Buchenwald, here is a paraphrase of Portia from Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice: "Therefore, if justice be thy plea, then none of us would see the light of salvation." We all live in glass houses, and we've gotten away with all kinds of transgressions for which we've not been held accountable in this life. Portia also adds that none of us "deserves" forgiveness, but it comes as a gift: "The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth like a gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath. And it is twice blessed--it blesseth him that gives and him that takes." Some people consider Shakespeare The Layman's Bible.

No the Nazi’s didn’t almost win the war, that’s just not correct. They were fighting almost singlehandedly, three Large economies with combined populations five times their own. Hitler MIGHT have been able to hold Western Europe but he nailed his own coffin shut when he attacked Russia. There’s no way they could reasonably expect to win against the USSR, UK and USA combined forces. Interesting, Japan knew they couldn’t win a prolonged war against the US, their strategy was to knock out the US pacific fleet and negotiate a peace after.

Gregory Graham more we’re than you’d think. Some were out of fear, but you’d be surprised at how propaganda will take over a group of people. Not saying they’re terrible people (the civilians who backed the nazis, obviously the nazi higher ups were so fucked up) but most people if they were in their situation would have done the exact same thing sadly. It is human nature, and people that say “no I would never be an guard at a concentration camp, I would’ve helped the Jews” are the ignorant and naive ones, and the ones susceptible to something like that in the future. Remember, every nazi was a human being, so in some way or another what they did is in all of us. Scary thought, but with that knowledge you can make conscious decisions to avoid following their footsteps. Jordan Peterson covers this, and he explains it a lot better than I probably just did

True, not all Germans were Nazis. However, those that collaborated with them in pursuit of a career in Science certainly bear a degree of guilt. Men like Wernher Von Braun (who later worked at NASA), dreamed only of developing Rocket Technology... and was willing to collaborate with the SS in that endeavor. As a result, the Nazis developed V2 Rocket bombs... using slave labor to construct them. Von Braun's contributions to science are undeniable... however, he could've fled in the 1930s and developed rockets somewhere else.

@Rion Very interesting. Its true the natives were killing each other before we started killing them. Ive been studying native Americans recently and I learned that the colonies originally tried to enslave them to work the fields. It makes sense, their were enough of them and they were local so why bother shipping in Africans. Well they would always escape, they knew the land too well, they were good hunters and trackers. However bringing slaves from Africa was like bringing a person to another planet, separate them from their families and you have a broken soul. A lost person with a broken soul makes a good slave. But I have to disagree thats not the only case. Example Nero burning down rome. When it was really the Catholics, they rose to power shortly after and blamed him. I guess the statement " Winners write history" is true for the masses.

We consider ourselves to be more noble and decent than other peoples, and consequently in a better position to decide what is right and wrong in the world. What kind of war do civilians suppose we fought, anyway? We shot prisoners in cold blood, wiped out hospitals, strafed lifeboats, killed or mistreated enemy civilians, finished off the enemy wounded, tossed the dying into a hole with the dead, and in the Pacific boiled the flesh off enemy skulls to make table ornaments for sweethearts, or carved their bones into letter openers…. [W]e mutilated the bodies of enemy dead, cutting off their ears and kicking out their gold teeth for souvenirs, and buried them with their testicles in their mouths…. We topped off our saturation bombing and burning of enemy civilians by dropping atomic bombs on two nearly defenseless cities, thereby setting an all-time record for instantaneous mass slaughter. As victors we are privileged to try our defeated opponents for their crimes against humanity; but we should be realistic enough to appreciate that if we were on trial for breaking international laws, we should be found guilty on a dozen counts. We fought a dishonorable war, because morality had a low priority in battle. The tougher the fighting, the less room for decency, and in Pacific contests we saw mankind reach the blackest depths of bestiality.” -- Edgar Jones, WWII Veteran
