They don't move a lot of Muay Thai because it's a sport of Thailand. They just fight that way. If you ever watch a Thailand boxer, it's the same thing. They come forward, stand right in front of you, throw hard shots and block punches. Very little head and foot movement, unlike the USA, where we teach to use the whole ring, constant head movement, utilization of the jab, etc. Over there it's mostly just power punches on offense, and blocking on defense.

@Memento Mori I didn't say anything contrary to what you said. I know Muay Thai is popular in Thailand, lol. Not true. Muay Thai has different styles: Muay Femur (technical counter striker), Muay Matt (pressure fighter; boxing + low kick style), Muay Khao (clinch fighter), Muay Tae (heavy kicker). Muay Femur style fighters move a lot- the entire style is about being a matador with awesome backward footwork, feints, super human reflexes, lots and lots of jabs and teeps. Eg of Femur fighters: Samart, Saenchai, Lerdsila, Dany Bill, Silapathai, Oley Kiatonaway. If you google pics of the fighters I mentioned you will notice that most of them look physically weak (Femurs are notorious for ignoring strength & conditioning) and give up weight, so they have to have great defense and footwork, otherwise they will get KO'd.

Depends on where you live in Europe. In The Netherlands (where I live) if you want to watch MMA you have to stay up all night for UFC (ppv ends after 6am), or wait a week and get awful Dutch commentary for Bellator, often even if the event is rather close to home and you can't avoid seeing the results before seeing the event (This goes for both) Only Cage Warriors on fightpass works if I want to watch fights with friends without knowing results. I prefer MMA as a sport, but these things suck all the joy out of watching it.

"I don't understand why kickboxing isn't big in the US"...until someone promotes kickboxing like MMA and boxing, it will never be big. That's how it is for any sport. One FC is not a big company, doesn't have the funds to acquire all the best kick boxers in the world for exclusive deals, doesn't have a kickboxing division (it's tiny and split between Muay Thai), has no presence in the West and doesn't even have full presence in East Asia. It is heavily focused on South East Asia, and is primarily an MMA promotion that loses a ton of money. They didn't even have a kickboxing champion until this year.
@chrisgrudge6964
4 жыл бұрын
@James Franko Bellator is easily the 2nd most important league. One FC doesn't even make money. Bellator has more named fighters, is in a more profitable market, and has more global presence - One FC is almost entirely restricted to South East Asia with some presence in East Asia, and is not widely watched any where else in the world. They have never even had a card outside of Asia yet. Petroysan is one fighter... Your argument doesn't make sense. You said that Kickboxing cannot become big because they are scattered through out promotions - I said that that can be fixed if a company decided to buy all the kickboxers to exclusive deals....your response is citing One FC - which hasn't done that at all, and is brand new to promoting kickboxing. I'm not following. One FC is hardly the gold standard of what a company can be, and they don't have anywhere near most of the best kickboxers in the world, they promote three different sports on top of that, and are a regional, they have never even held a card in Europe or USA. They are not the most popular combat sport promotion in Philippines, Thailand, Japan, China or Taiwan which are all places they run their promotions in. They are not even a profitable company, and have never made money in their entire companies existence. And yes, if a kickboxing promotion wanted to become popular they would need to break into the American market. Glory is the only company trying, and they do not have the resources, booking, marketing strategy or the right stars to do so. Glory has a bad marketing division and strategy (none of their fights feel big, even among die hard fans). They also need to promote an American star. They don't really have anyone with much personality in general yet. They need more money to pay their fighters better. Their social media presence is archaic and outdated. They wasted a lot of their initial money on older heavy weights who were on the way out in their early days. If Glory did something like Rizin did and paid Floyd Mayweather to fight one of their guys it would have done a lot for them, because at least now people who do not watch kickboxing know who a borderline top ten fighter like Tenshin is. I agree, that the key to a kickboxing promotion becoming popular is carving a niche out in USA, but none of the kickboxing promotions either know how to market to Americans, have any interest in expanding to USA or have the funds to do so. I mean it is very strange that you would mention One FC, because they really do not cater to Americans much at all outside of providing English commentary and they are primarily an MMA promotion. Kickboxing and Glory lacks good booking, to be frank. They could learn a lot from copying Pro Wrestling, which is what the UFC did to become popular. No kickboxing promotion knows how to play the game, and that is why kickboxing is a super niche sport.

I'd have to disagree with you, kickboxing is all about distance control, range, timing and angles vs Muay Thai fighters would rather block a strike and hold a strong base without being knocked off position or using heavy slips and angles. It's often two fighters trading kick for kick or clinching vs feinting, mixing up punch and kick combos and moving out of range in kickboxing. I've fought in kickboxing and Muay Thai they are different worlds because of the use of elbows, clinch and throws/sweeps. He's not saying Muay Thai guys don't move, but the Thai style is to be planted like a tree and immovable, not sure how they're training you guys at that gym but a lot of these western clubs say they're Muay Thai and they're really just glorified mma and shitty kickboxing, and the tell tale sign is whether there's a Kru there or not leading the striking program. @@np494609 I feel you. I'm quite aware of the differences and what makes Muay Thai itself. All I'm saying is I'm 5'2 120 lbs(on a good day) everyone else in my gym is huge(compared to me) so even tho my coach thought me the traditional stand and trade most weight on back foot style of Muay Thai. I choose to break some rules to adapt Muay Thai so suite me better. Trying to hold your base when I 6'2 190 pound guy with almost no control is throwing bombs at you doesn't always work the best for me. So I use slips more often than an average Thai practitioner and try to attacks from different angles. I watch kickboxing and Thai fighters who more suite my style. Ex. Sam-a or nong, and lerdzilla. I would compare my style as more of a Dutch kickboxing stlye. However I utilize the clinch whenever possible. I don't discredit anything you said but from my eyes Muay Thai is about control, range, timing and angles aswell. James Franko read he’s comment again ???,jabbing hand speed footwork punching ???,yes takes lot skill to be a boxer,but I’m a kickboxer every punch a boxer uses we use,apart from we have kicks knees elbows sweeps clinches way more techniques and skills to learn,plus need better balance and better footwork as longer range got to get in and out,legs way longer then hands,it’s obvious what he’s saying,that Mma guys are talented everywhere which is true they are,and he’s mind boxers great skills,and no need for the middle ground which is kickboxing,which isn’t true at all,nothing better then seeing head kick knockout and they are better strikers then Mma guys and boxers,just no promotion or money in it

Always considered MMA to be the man of all trades but master of none. Why a less than average youtuber can beat MMA stars in Boxing and they wouldnt stand a chance in Thailand. All hey have left is their grappling but rolling around on the ground is not my cup of tea.
