I notice several comments about blades breaking/coming off, and would like to share what my experience has been with that. I have a homemade mill as well, and in the beginning I had a few blades to break, so I decided to loosen the blade after finishing with my sawing project, and low and behold I haven't broken another one since. I broke 3 or 4 the first year I had the mill, and that was 8 years ago, and not broken any since, so I do believe loosening the blade after finishing my project, is why I haven't broke anymore . Nice little mill. I wish I could build one like that for my personal use. Wish I had the know how to do that. Thanks for sharing. My brother has a Wood Mizer mill. But I would like to build one.

epic epic work, much better than our home build alskan type mill.....looks like firstly it actually cuts straight and secondly that it can accommodate decent sized stems :)

Yes exactly blades break, and that's why it is dangerous. Just because your saw hasn't hurt you or anyone else yet doesn't mean that it can't. All he was saying is that you should be careful while using the saw, kinda the old "better safe then sorry" idea you know.

Really, once the blade separates from the drive wheel, there is very little energy to it. As long as you stay behind the teeth (which he did) there is very little risk. But it will cut you up bad if the blade is still on the tires or directly after it comes off.

I understand that, I was just making the point that a blade can still hurt you therefor it is dangerous. I've had a few blades break on me and no one has gotten hurt yet but I still remain cautious about, as does everyone I work with.

Maybe it's because I know diddly squat about engineering, but when I say "homemade sawmill" I was a little suspicious about it! However, this looks, and appears to run, very smooth, so clearly you do know a thing or two! Is this your first homemade saw mill or have you tried others before this and this is the result of trial and error?

Why very dangeorus? Blades brake, but I have have never been hurt and my saw didn't hurt anyone else either. If there's no cover on the wheels - just stand away from the line of the blade (in case it brakes), if there is a cover - nothing to worry about!

Hi. Can you tell me what is the HP of the engine, what blade speed you are running at (feet per sec.), and how do you prevent the blade twisting and plunging (or lifting) when cutting? I have made a howmmade sawmill driven by a 7HP single cylinder honda driving a 2 inch wide blade and I am having a lot of trouble with the blade diving (ie. cutting downwards) into the log, even though the input guide is very close to the log and the blade is fairly tight. Any advice would be deeply appreciated. (Richard, Isle of Man, UK)

The engine is a 16 horse Briggs. From what you've described you have to wide a blade and not enough tension.

Joe Legace Hi Joe. That is very helpful. I am toying with the idea of buying a new 20hp V twin Honda petrol engine, costing some £800 (abt. $1200?). Expensive. I have been looking around for a Briggs & Stratton V twin of abt 18hp but they seem to be like hens teeth here. The cheapest I have found is one for £350 with no warranty on it! I am told by a company in the UK who make-to-length bandsaws blades upto 8 inches wide that they recommend a blade speed of 8,000 ft/min, or 120 ft/sec! These must be very difficult to achieve without very large driving wheels and a powerful electric motor, which is what large bandsaws in sawmills are actually using. If I can achieve a blade speed of 60-80 ft/sec that could be enough for this sawmill. Thanks anyway. Any other gems of wisdom that you discover would be much appreciated. When I get this thing sawing properly I will post up a video.

Hola white Eagle, use translator, las poleas de la sierra deben estar a 90 grados con la cama del trozo, si estan a menos de 90 grados cortaras hacia abajo, dentro del trozo, espero te sirva.
