Joe was easily the best side character in earlier seasons. He was not only the funniest of Peter's friends (especially with his yelling) but I always saw him as an interest character dive into how disable people have to go through life. Despite this disability he was still able to be a person, he was short tempered and well respected as a cop, even his relationship with Bonnie wasn't so hate filled. Now he's just an excuse to make the same joke "He's crippled get it? His wife hates him because he's crippled" like wasn't part of the point of Joe to showcase he could still do things despite this setback?
@goingunder2548

I felt like pre-flanderisation joe was genuinely great disability rep. He was an example of how you could incorporate a disabled character into a comedy show without being cynical/punching down, and give wheelchair users a break from only being in melodramatic dramas with characters who resent their lives now that they’re wheelchair bound. Modern family guy managed to make an amalgamation of the two worst things: shitty ‘dark’ comedy and the dreary melodrama of ‘I can never enjoy life again but I’ll eventually be used as inspiration porn for the able bodied protagonist’.

Comedy is about subverting expectations. Which often translates into being offensive, yes, but offensive does not equal subversive. "Hey look Joe is a cripple, look at him be a sad sack of shit in his wheelchair" isn't subversive, it's only offensive. "Hey look Joe is a cripple but he's about to take out the trash, how will he manage that? Maybe he'll have to put the garbage in his lap or a wagon or something? Nope, he wears hand shoes and carries the garbage on his ass." That subverts expectations. It may not be their best joke about Joe being crippled but it's at least a joke.

I think Joe imo is the BEST depiction of a disabled character in media. He's got the occasional wheelchair joke which are usually hilarious, but he NEVER let his disability define him. He's a great cop, a good husband, a great friend, able to do a ton of activities with his friends despite his disability. In the first episode he's in, they actually hid his disability and the cast had no idea he was in a wheelchair until he showed up at a baseball game and HELPED THEM WIN. The guy is a beast and should be treated better as a character

They definitely have played into wheelchair jokes, but they were always there in my opinion. I think they just got lazy and started making them more prevalent. The biggest problem with Joe's character is his family. Both Bonnie and Kevin are throwaway characters only used to setup jokes or situations. They're so one dimensional. Kevin is, for lack of a better word, crazy. And Bonnie is just a miserable housewife. Since season 1, I've viewed Joe as a heroic, multi-dimensional character looking for acceptance. The part I hate also with Joe is that they eventually just gave him the Meg treatment of just socially awkward disgusting weirdo. Not being able to have a conversation or just barely say or be into something rando weird everyone else puts him down for.

It's staggering how they changed their views on Joe. When we first see him crying, it's sad and awkward enough for everyone to leave. The joke was that his friends didn't want to be in this situation so they leave in whatever way they could. But then in season 6, Chris makes Joe cry and Peter finds it funny enough to save as his ringtone. Joe's pain becomes the source of jokes surrounding his character.

A thing I do not like about any of these shows is how the main characters never change while side characters does. Like nowadays in Simpsons and Family Guy many of the background people look like humans, which make the main cast look really offputting when out next to.
@FrenkTheJoy

That's been a problem for a while, with celebrities As Themselves they basically just make them literally the celebrity but with yellow skin (unless the celebrity isn't white in real life), so it looked super weird even back in like season 3 of the simpsons

100%!! I especially notice it in that all the main cast has exaggerated head shapes, but the background characters are all fairly well proportioned. It’s really off putting to see massive cartoon head shapes next to normal size and shaped heads

Btw loving these Family Guy character analysis videos. Its refreshing to see the show in its early state and then comparing to how the characters have changed to be more unlikeable as the show got shittier. Joe was always strange to me. The character itself will always go down in my mind as one of the stand outs in Family Guy, and one of Patrick Warburton's best roles. But I just can't remember a time in the series when he wasn't being made fun of for being disabled and that was his character. So it was interesting to see him actually be respected by his peers in the early ones. Its just as you said tho: Family Guy can choose to write amazing stories for its characters. The staff on it just chooses not to and prefers to take the safe, offensive humor route because they don't see it more than just a dumb adult comedy.

Joe is built up so godly in early family guy because it shows that despite being disabled in any way shape or form, you can still be a powerful person in society, no matter how small it may seem; what may seem small to one person is everything to another

There’s so much the show could do to make the show adult and speak to their audience about dark topics people go through and overcome, like with joe they could basically show how meaningful he is to the group regardless of being handicapped, or maybe Brian, instead of being a complete ass in the show have him be a good guy again and show that because he’s a dog he gets used by people or treat him like a dog even though he can function like any other human being and overcome it, but instead the characters are either used as a punching bag or turn them into terrible people for dumb laughs

Isn't it weird that the only guy that seems to get better throughout the show is Quagmire? The epitome of a joke character? The rapist? Think about it! Peter and fam get flanderized ridiculously Joe is now suicidal in a loveless marriage Cleveland gets transformed into a main character for a spin-off, gets a colorful family of his own but then he comes back as a bland background character after his show gets cancelled as if it was his fault it did And now he have Quargmire. - We now know his perversion is related to his traumatic childhood - He apparently despises himself for the things he does - His father is trans and he's able to accept it as one of the first characters to do so on TV - He gets to berate the worst character on the show from a moral high ground - He used to try and get with Lois while still being friends with Peter, but in the latest season she directly wanted him to chase after her and he didn't. He got over it for her and Peter's sake. - He had multiple chances to find true love that fell through - He's shown multiple times as a supportive figure in Meg's life. It's a plus in my book because Meg is precious. Quagmire is the only one going through some sort of a positive arc throughout the series, the rest either stagnate or get worse. So it not only proves that these writers can and are allowed to write character development onto the show, but they actively refuse to do it for everyone except The Hawaiian Short Giggity Guy. Just cancel this crapfest and let Seth MacFalrane die in peace. He suffered enough.

Family Guy's entire decline is based on laziness. In the early seasons (including the first year or two of the reboot) the joke was clearly laughing at ableists, homophobes, mysogenists, etc. They'd portray an edgy joke where the gag is that if you laugh or agree the joke is on you and you were wrong for laughing. That was clear. It challenged the preconceptions of the audience. Really quickly into the reboot that changed to the much easier practice of making a joke at the expense of the minority while making the audience aware that it's taboo. It might seem like a subtle difference, but the original approach is to challenge whereas the easier option is to placate the viewer. To say it's okay to laugh as you know it's not okay to laugh. To take the joke from offending the watcher to offending the character.

I've honestly always hated the blatant ablism when it comes to Joe. As someone who's disabled myself, most of us see our mobility aids as freedom rather than a restriction. Wheelchairs can provide people with the ability to still be able to live their lives and be active in their community
@tbbcch1039

I mean I understand your point, and it certainly valid for this depiction to bother you. But honestly, that's how family guy treats all communities. So if the ablist jokes are something that bother you, what parts of the show do you even enjoy? Because the rest of it is more of the same but towards other communities.

I really hate how they treat Joe now, they actually did make him seem pretty capable and badass even if he was in a wheel chair. But I guess it was just easier to write jokes about him not being able to work or doing basic things, also Bonnie's change in character really makes me dislike her so much.

What I really want to see is a spin off of family guy where joe, stewey, and Brian all realise how far the rest of the town has fallen into madness (referring to how bad the writing and characters are in modern family guy) and all deciding to leave town together So they leave, and the show is about them all trying to find a place to settle down and just live, but the new characters the trio meet are actually realistic characters that aren’t really fazed by an extremely smart unaging baby and a sapient immortal dog I just think that would be an interesting show concept

Sometimes it is funny when Joe can’t do something because of his wheelchair. Yet it’s only funny when this happens if nobody comments on it at all, or at least only Joe comments on it. Something like Joe saying “I don’t know what you expected me to do in a new sports car, Peter. I can’t even use my legs to push the pedals… I guess I can pretend to drive it with my imagination, but then I’ll look even more like a freak” and then move on. I also really like the episodes where they use Joe’s wheelchair as a quick gag on how it can sometimes be useful. For example, in the episode where Meg’s new boyfriend is an escaped convict, Joe chases him downhill. Meg shouts “no, don’t go downhill!” because she wants him to escape, but it’s too late… Gravity is on Joe’s side and he easily catches up to and arrests the convict

The writers could've really benefited listening to some disabled comedians. Like you said the best jokes with him involve looking at a situation form his unique perspective. But more often they just rely on the able bodied characters perspective of him.

Joe is supposed to be the moral compass of the group, much like Cleveland was supposed to be a voice a reason, supposed to balance out the immoral antics of Peter and Quagmire. But then Family Guy got mean spirited and cruel, where it became a show about unhappy people who hate each other and live to make others miserable in anyway they can. They turned Jow into King of the Hill's Bill Dauterive, a sad sack with suicidal tendencies except they use it as a joke instead of character development

I am SO GLAD you are covering this, I've been miserable with Joe's evolution. The way he would casually fly off the handle but be ultimately harmless (which is visually exacerbated by his paraplegia) made him a sweet but flawed family man. He could spring into action when it mattered so he wasn't weak, the joke was that nothing could take this specimen of a man down. What they've turned him into is disrespectful to the character and the audience. Can't wait to watch the video. edit: when you made the poll of which family guy character evo you hated most, I voted Joe right away, so seeing this in my notifs a couple days later was SUCH a treat

I have two of the Joe Swanson action figures that became a meme a few years back. It's sad to see how such a still iconic character has kinda become just sort of there, when he was such a fundamental character in the early and mid seasons of the show for some of its best episodes.

Joe used to be decent representation. Yes he was in a wheelchair, but he was also an extremely well respected and capable cop (Peter is flat out jealous of him in his first appearance) with a loving wife. Sure he had some anger/over excitement issues, but he was just a really good guy who happened to be disabled. Now he’s JUST the disabled character. Every single joke is about how his “legs don’t work”. Like how he’s on desk duty because he can’t work in the field, how his wife resents him because she has to take care of him, how he’s emotionally fragile because he’s “half of a man”. His character devolvement from a well rounded and accomplished person to just one big handicap joke is the most sad to me out of all the characters on the show.
