Joe Tex was and remains one of the most underrated and often overlooked artists ever in the popular world of music. His story is hardly ever told. His legacy isn't embraced. Tex's legacy isn't celebrated enough.

The entertainers today and their music is horrible!! I quote the words of the god father of soul, " They just ain't got no soul! ". Long live soul music!

By the early 70s I was 7 or 8 years old growing up in Los Angeles as a Muslim Child. We were followers of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. I had previously heard a song by Joe about a girl with skinny legs, but he had a new song called I got cha that I loved. A few years later in 1974 we attended a meeting in LA and the speaker was Yusef Hazeez aka Joe Tex. I just learned today in 2021 that he had actually become a Muslim in 1966 which I never knew

At David Jones(department store) record bar, Newcastle NSW Australia, during my second year of high school, after school I called in at DJ's, as it was called, and found all these American ex-jukebox 45s, among them I'd eventually buy 6 Joe Tex singles, all on the Atlantic-distributed, Buddy Killen-owned Dial label, Show Me, Truest Woman In The World, Men Are Gettin' Scarce, Papa Was Too(flip of Truest Woman...), C.C. Rider, and some others. At that time I'd never heard of Joe Tex(in 1969 at age 14), I just bought these exotic 45s and played them on my HMV Minigram, using the pop-up centre-spindle adaptor to centre them properly on the turntable. I still have them, 48 years on.

My first memory of Mr Tex is I was in the first grade when I Gotcha came out the boys would dance to the song and the girls would run. My second Joe Tex memory is years later I think I was in the 8th grade and I was doing my homework and on school night my mother yelled come here Joe Tex was singing Ain’t gonna bump no more. Years later I bought my first c d the Atlantic Records story and it is there that I was introduced to his broader work.

Joe Tex was a better vocalist than James Brown. Brown originally started out doing good vocals but he eventually morphed into a screamer and that's how he stayed right till the end of his career. But as far as vocals go Tex definitely had more Range than Brown. And Jackie Wilson was totally in a class by himself as a vocal powerhouse.
