We had our own "day of reckoning" in high school football back in the late 50s. It's not something new. It makes you play scared if you're a starter and have Open Challenge Tuesday where any player can be challenged for his position by anybody on the team. Game day was like a day off after a hard week of practice and it worked well for us.

@COLIN - Long time listener here - I have always loved the show and your philosophy and its application to sports as well as life. I happen to be a humble and reasonable Iowa alumnus (Class of 2011). I am not looking for or expecting any of your praise for any Iowa victory - overreactions are for amateurs (I don't care that they just finished beating two top 25 teams soundly - preseason rankings have little value beyond TV ratings IMO). But please find another team to deride as the "Fake ID" of CFB. This label is fair if, when Iowa racks up a nice record against a far easier Big Ten West schedule, you hear loud noises of "Oh yeah! Iowa has a chance to win the the Big Ten, or even the CFB Playoff!!" - because most Hawkeye fans that are honest know that is unrealistic (I have zero clue where you might even hear that kind of noise btw). I still stay in touch with many of my friends from school and none of us are delusional/fanatic enough to harbor those expectations that we could hang with teams like Alabama, Clemson, etc. We know our strengths and are proud them, but to dismantle your obnoxious, half-decade, lazy take, we know we cannot compete with the true Titans of CFB. And we are fine with that because it's simple reality. That said, I am proud to say we are coached soundly. 2 and 3 star recruits are developed into competent college players that regularly get drafted into the NFL. Stop ignoring - we are consistently putting OL and TE talent into the modern NFL. Oh yeah - Urban Meyer (IMO the undisputed 2nd best modern-era CFB coach) lost 4 Big Ten Games over 7 seasons. Guess which Big Ten team whooped him for the largest margin of victory by 31 points? "Fake ID" Iowa. I watched that entire game - DID YOU? OSU quit with 9 minutes left to play. If they played 10 times, OSU should win that 9 other times. But life is about results. Cold Facts. Cold Fact is that Kirk Ferentz bested your former darling colleague Urban Meyer. I will always remember where I was when I watched that game, because I know Iowa is unlikely to do it again, and may as well treat that as the shining moment of my fandom for them. But, after that victory, we Iowa fans never dared argue that "Oh Urban Meyer has bested Saban, and Ferentz just bested Meyer, therefore Ferentz is better than Saban". That's not how Hawkeye fans ever think. Iowa doesn't need any praise when they are relatively successful, because we know our ceiling is limited. But you are giving poor and lazy analysis when you tell the nation that Iowa is somehow "Fake" in the overall CFP landscape.

I'm late to seeing this segment, BUT.. I'm not a Clemson fan but I was a St. John Bosco High School Football team fan and I've been watching DJ Ugalelei for a few years now, and he battled with Bryce Young and Mater Dei HS, for back to back years and they played some TOUGH GAMES and were almost a rivalry. And they both tied each other with Mater Dei winning the first year and St John Bosco won the 2nd year, but both beat each other in the regular season.. And last year DJ Ugalalei started one game because of Lawrence had a little injury so he sat for a whole game and DJ started on the road VS. NOTRE DAME, who at the time they both were ranked inside the top 8, and DJ and Kan Book and tht game was amazing and back and forth, and a multiple OT game, tht Notre Dame ended up winning, but DJ played a amazing game and threw the ball all over, and showed his running ability to get out the pocket.. I agree with Joel about Clemson. The offensive line needs to improve and DJ can’t make mistakes like that going forward but they’ll have time to get better and stack up some wins in the ACC. I think there’s only two teams that can even compete on their schedule and Clemson will still be favorites in every game. Only teams like Ohio State and Georgia that have elite pass rushers will be able to hang with Clemson.
@someoneanonymous2516
3 жыл бұрын
For all of the talking the national media does about Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, and Ohio State, they never mention the fact that it’s so easy to recruit in those programs. It’s pretty easy to win 11 or more games when you’re better than the other team at every position on the field. (Urban Meyer getting steamrolled by Iowa and Purdue a few years ago is embarrassing considering the gap in talent.) The playoff exists to funnel the best talent into the top 6-8 programs so that the NCAA and ESPN can make more money than they would if the playoff was diverse and fluid from year to year.
